Default GAZ coilovers

I bought new boge shocks a while back and haven't fitted them yet. Given the general condition of my suspension I reckon I'll be replacing a lot more parts than just the shocks so the costs will mount up. I'm now thinking of selling on the shocks and putting these in instead.

They have a sale on right now so the price looks good. I'll call them tomorrow. I'm looking for a road set-up that doesn't lower the car any. I know someone here bought some a while back but I didn't see any follow up post.

Anyone installed these or got any feedback?

Cheers mike

Which Boge model did you get standard or sport?

Mike,
I don't believe these are available in the USA so it will mainly be Euro / UK participants, me being one of them.

Firstly that's not a sale but the normal price, I bought mine last year from Corby Motorsports

http://www.corbymotorsport.com/porsc...over-kit-p-511

I recommend them unreservedly for the same reasons your already considering them as a viable option. No need to retain anything other than the top mounts, so you can forget about the seized collars and rusted springs.

Don't order online, as you'll get shortend shock bodies by default (dam Peugeot brigade lowering everything), so ask for full length bodies. I went with harder springs, 500 / 350 front / rear, which is firm but not hard. I've never driven a 928 on new factory setup, but as this is from the 80s I'm guessing softer was the norm back then.

The standard springs lengths are fine, but the rears would benefit from being longer (12") as the 9" supplied sits high up the shock body giving more adjustment potential and less chance of bottoming.

Hope this helps as a start.

Hi Brian that is some good info thanks. Were there any issues fitting these or did they bolt straight on?

Also when you say 12" on the rear does that mean you went 9" on the front? And full length bodies do you know what size that is?

I emailed the suppler I linked to above and they got back stating

"The spring rates we supply with the GHA kit are 650lbs front & 450lbs rear & this is the best combination after testing, they are more than the standard rates but you don’t get as much movement out of a coilover spring as you would a standard setup. The ride height is adjustable but you will be able to get the standard ride height."

I don't know much about spring rates but that sounds high. I would probably go with something similar to you or less. It's for road only. I like the idea of having a fairly stock feel with the potential to firm things up a little via the adjustment.

625 and 450 is too much. I have this kit on my GTS 5-spd with 600/400 and it could be a bit jarring on the UK's pot holed roads. 500/300 is perhaps better for a daily driver

Mike,
Fitting is easier than the OEM shocks as the coil diameters are smaller, otherwise no issues once you've got the rear pins out.

Stick with standard length bodies, GAZ supplied front springs (not 600lb though) and ask for 12" length rears. Not sure if I have a picture but the collars sit high on the body, maybe it's just me?

As for spring rates listen to Cheburator, he's way ahead of the curve on this.

Some pics of my rear installation, so you can see what I mean on spring lengths.

Plenty of room left for a longer spring.

Thanks guys and thanks for uploading the pics. It makes sense now. I'll order these tomorrow hopefully. Been having a hard time getting them on the phone. I'll go for the full size shocks with the longer spring on the rear and 500/300 springs.

Got through to them this morning and put my order in. It will be 3 or 4 weeks before they arrive. Not sure when I'll get a chance to install them. I'll follow up once I do. Thanks again.

Suspension arrived today. Looks good and so far I'm happy. I'm not in a position to fit this myself at the moment so my take it to my indi.

Anyone able to estimate how many hours we're talking to install an all four corners.?

Mike,
Installation time will all be dependant upon the rear suspension pins coming out easily or not. Mine were greased and came out with relative ease. My install times are not typical as I'm old, slow and hadn't done this before, so it took a day per corner. I was also cleaning and replacing bolts and cable brackets etc like you do when it's your own car.

I'd like to think a pro could do all 4 corners in a day, correct tools, lift etc.

What springs did you order in the end?

Nice shocks but do they have piston covers?
it will be a short time before the rocks sandblast into the piston surface and then your new shocks will be leaking
also the covers will prevent water ingress

I ended up going with 600 and 400 spring rates. When I put the order in for 500/300 the vendor questioned it but put the order in anyway. GAZ then got back to him and recommended the higher spring rate as well. In the end I decided to go with the manufacturer recommendation. I'm a bit worried they'll be too stiff though.

Good tip regarding the covers. I may see if I can pick up some generic gators that fit.
