Default Head Project

Well here I is, to embark on a journey into the the bowels of my 928. After cracking a head and extensive research on my 1st 928 , I realized that these things are not for just anybody. I am not a mechanic, but a firefighter. The lines and tempers of these beautiful cars have started to flow through my blood. The passion for them has over come me to continue as such as my stupidity as a firefighter has. In my work we run in while everybody runs out. 928 persons run in while the weak we usually leave behind. Thus the addrinilin junky that I am and my bank account to continue to dwell into nothingness my 928 shall ride again.

Bak to the future:

I bought my 1982 928 porsche from my grandfather Febuary or so of 2003. It had been sitting under a couple trees outside. After chewing out my elder we then put a new battery in it and got it running. My plans thus forth have been to restore this as original as possible. After driving this thing as a daily driver I come to one conclusion. If your going to drive you might as well porschit, and I now with most of the money I don't have am considered among my freinds and family as POOR****.

I am going to try to keep track by writing and photos through this process as others have on other projects .With out this type of information I believe that the 928s would not be takin care and modifications would bring them in to the rice burner age.

Through this process I know I will need your help with questions and answers and will hope to help you with my possible experiences.

If you have any info that you think might help me shoot me the info.

The Project:

1. Find and retreive Heads
2. Buy a Complete Engine Gasket Set
3. Have a drink.
4. Pull engine
5. Have a drink
6. Replace heads
7. Replace some other gaskets
8. Other

1. Find and Reretreive Heads

I looked hi and low at prices for heads ranging in price for new $400 to $1200 a piece. Used heads with valves still in them were $450 to $700 a peice.

Rennlist forum has been the greatest for my endeavor. You the readers and posters of this forum have offered me peices of heartt for my car at verious prices. Everything from just the head to whole engine.

I finially found mine through the talks of this forum a cleaned up set for the bargain price of a 2 yr membership to rennlist.(with out valves)

After making such a find here my first priority was becoming a rennlist member so after dinning my wife she let me get a membership.

A friend of mine went to california for his sons graduation from marine flight school and I had him swing by the persons house to pick them up and then they drove them back here to texas.

Heads are in now the house on the kitchen table and I am now sleeping on the couch. Just kiddin.

2. Buy a Complete Engine Gasket Set

After looking around I seen prices from $245 to about $1000 for complete Engine gasket set.

At this time I am fixing to purchase them.

I recommend calling one of the big three. I found a couple sets here around texas but pricing was to high and also felt the persons were not as knowledgable as the big 3.

At this time we go to number 3

3. Have a drink.

Time to ponder on the books, manuals, posts and hope to receive my cds today from Jim Morehouse in the mail.

I will update this post later as I take steps and or inforamation is forwarded to me.

I don't know the rules about listing companys names and such here for pricing and such. At no time in this project do I mean to degrade or promote anybody or company. My intent is for the sole purpose of the love and care of or porsches.

Talk to ya soon.

Jack, my 4.7 Euro heads are in the shop having a valve job done. Today they called to let me know that everything is within specification and good shape except the valve guides. What a relief, at only $6.00 each, even though I need 16 of them. I was expecting to hear "Bad valves, springs and seats" too. After seeing what the individual components can cost, I wish you well.
