This same thing happened to me, it should not have separated and I was really trying not to break it, next time I'll use a heat gun first.
What led me down this road was after driving in a rain storm at highway speed, I developed a miss/ breakup at higher RPM. Inspection I noticed that he rubber covers on one of the connectors was split from (heat/steam?) replace both w/ new. Figured they got wet, IIRC I did the coils too just in case.
No more ignition issues after 4 years.

Yep, it should have come off as 1 piece.... I use a brake adjuster that has pretty sharp ends to pry on stuff like this, works great.
Also, I should have noted that the tester works with the module in the car.
