Just throwing this out there.

928s 4.7 litre 3 speed auto that was running and it complete, good body.

928s 4.7 litre 5 speed manual condition unknown with a destroyed body (as in a junkyard had it and piled crap on it with a forklift, broke the windows and left the whole thing in the rain for 3 months).

I like manuals.

So, investigate condition of manual car drive train and maybe put in auto car ?

Or just leave well enough alone and concentrate on getting auto car running ?

OR put drive train in 1985 4.7 litre 928 S3 auto with mangled engine and good body ?

I dunno.... I am rapidly being surrounded by 928's that don't go.

Make sure the '83 auto runs first before swapping drivetrain. '85 is an 5L 288hp 32v engine (unless its an euro), not 4.7 with L-jetronic.

The late model one is twin dizzy 4.7 litre 3 speed auto , the two 928s cars are 5 speed manual and 3 speed auto single dizzy 4.7 litres.

They all have the "spider" type manifolds. The two early ones have mechanical injection, the later one has EFI.

I thought by '85 all automatics were 4 speed. Are you sure it's a 3 speed?

They stopped putting 3 speeds in euros in 1983. The PO probably broke the shift plate and replaced it with one that they sourced incorrectly.

If you floor it and it changes gears 3 times it is a 4 speed. Or you can look under the car to see what type of ATF reservoir it has.

I can't floor it. I have never driven it. The previous owner over tightened the bolt on a camshaft wheel and the whole thing let go and took the engine with it.
