New 928s owner
#16
Hi all, The car was owned by a retiree that stored it at his vacation home in Florida, drove it sparingly. he had it since 1991 I spoke with him after I bought it, and he verified the mileage. he bought it will 12k miles. The original owner sold the car because he was afraid of it, on a rainy day he gave it too much gas, and did a doughnut! he sold it shortly after

It's dropped back to page 2. It's usually on one of the first 3 pages of threads. It's pretty active.

Car looks nice. But I have to agree on those questioning the mileage. The odo gears are notoriously fragile, and there are "more than a few" cars that turned out to have more miles than were shown on the odo.
Service records are the best way, and probably the only way to be certain (or at least as certain as you can be).
But there are a few ways to guesstimate. Discussed here:

Edit to strike out comments on validity of mileage. Post before mine addressed it.

When I bought the car I thought it was a 1986.5, turns out it is a 1986 without the s4 breaks and suspension ETC. Checked the VIN later after being educated.
How much does this effect the value, not being a 1986.5?
it it a major drop, or just a slight drop in value?
With the low mileage I partially bought the car as an investment.
Doesn't have much effect on value. Congrats, nice pickup and welcome.

Nice option list. If you pull off one of the rear wheels, check for 11mm spacer on the hub indicating 'widened rear track' even though it's not no the list. The dealer may have added it with the BBS.

Prices have been all over the place lately for mid year cars with anything from high teens to thirty-ish possible for this one depending on documentation, catch up maintenance and presentation.

Definitely a very desireable car. Values are potentially on verge of sharply increasing especially for this one if a truly honest example. Well north of 20 is my guess. Chances are that it will need some maintenance thpugh like crankcase vent hoses and fuel lines

Not great. Don't be disappointed, you've got a great car, but it might take longer for the investment levels of appreciation to show up. Someone here cobbled together a desirability ranking a while back, and the US 85/86 cars were at the bottom, just above the US 80-84 cars. I've got an '85, and it's a great car: the highest hp of the old body style readily available in the States and the only old body style with the Borg-Warner gearbox updates, but the collectibility there is depressed by the grey market Euro cars which were 20hp or so better.
How good are the maintenance records? 928s like to rot if left to sit, and all the rubber bits under the hood are obscenely pricey. BC's 86.5 on BaT probably set the record for S3 selling price, but he more or less rebuilt the mechanicals of that car from the ground up and documented it well. S3's are tough because it's an oddball engine that was only used for 2 years basically just in the US (with some exceptions). Some parts are hard to find, some parts are impossible to find.
