Well, this sure is a new one. I do not know if I have been under oiled all these years. Can some of the OB experts chime in on this one? Jim? Brian? Rob? Alex?

Another curious OB owner. 8 liters with filter would be about 8.5 quarts. Need to check my owners manual. Can't remember now how much I put in at last change.

The TB shows some interesting data. 7l with filter change and 6.5l without one for the oldest cars?

Really highlights the need to mostly fill the oil and then top-up after a short test run. Oil filters vary, too, with some manufacturers "correct" filters being smaller than the OEM quart-sized monsters. It's not like US cars were where ya tossed in 5 quarts and it was done.

yes, but the conundrum is whether you are using the correct measuring stick to determine whether you have the right amount of oil! This one has me wondering now.

Ok, I have checked. My dipstick has what remains of a yellow painted handle and has never been shortened as per the TB. My owners manual says fill with 7.4 qts (7 liters) with filter change. As I read the bulletin, when my oil level is at the max. line it is actually at minimum and anything less than max line is really below minimum. When I changed oil a few weeks ago, just after buying the car, I put in 7 qts, thinking it would be OK to run .4 qts below max. Car has 133K miles and I bet it has been run low its entire life. Suppose I should "overfill" or shorten my dip stick.

Since the bulletin was published in April, '79, I would think '80-'82 MY cars with 4.5 engine would have later dip stick.

Top to bottom.

#225 - 1978 - yellow dip stick, original (unaltered, but filled past the narrowing on the stick with 8.5 quarts by me...you can see the imprint of the oil height on the blue towel above dip stick).

#613 - 1978 - yellow dip stick, altered by someone.

#686 - 1984 - green dip stick.

Seems to be some variations, but if you look at the oil imprint and #613's level marks they line up nicely.

Didn't change original dip stick, since I wanted it to be original...wonder how many judges check this out?

Brian.

Thanks for the pics Brian.
Just for reference, here's a pic of my '78 yellow handle dipstick which has been altered as per the service bulletin Anders posted
