Default optimoly TA

I see a lot of reference for Optimoly TA in the brake section of the manual. Can I subsitiute anything for it, like Permatex copper anit-seize lub. Haven't seen much Optimoly laying around at the auto stores.

regards,

Rez

Optimoly is a Porsche product. There are several varieties for different parts of the car. It must be the best.

For the brake slides and pistons you can use standard brake grease.

Brings up a good topic, well at least to me.....

See a lot of different "factory" lubes, anti-seize, etc. that can't be
bought at the local stores. Now me being one of the originality
fanatics out there would like to have most if not all of these materials
on hand. Anybody have any good places/sites that have all of these
materials for order?? Have often thought that I would buy these in
quantity, repackage in smaller amounts, and sell as lube "kits" to the
Porsche public.........any thoughts?

I have been trying to do some cross referencing of the "optimoly" compounds to products that are more readily available. I did alot of archive and web searching a few months back to trying to figure this out, but really never got solid answers.

I know that this stuff is available from Porsche, but I though Optimoly was a Castrol product...long since renamed/defunct/rebranded. Certainly no expert here, but that's what I turned up in my searching.

Other than this post, there are only 4 other hits in the 928 Forum on the word "optimoly"...a few more if you search all the rennlist forums, but still not a definitive statement like "Optimoly TA = Brand X Copper Anti-seize" or the like. Personally I have copper antiseize, aluminium antiseize, white lithium grease, moly grease, Loctite purple, blue & red, plus a few others in my arsenal.

Any chance some of the more knowledgeble people on the list could help us out here? I recall seeing Optimoly TA and HT in the WSM...there are no doubt more than these. Can we get a list going for those who follow behind us?

Hi,
Steveco - you are correct, the Optimoly range was from a German lubricants Company taken over by Castrol many years ago

Of course Castrol is now BP

Many comparitive products exist - the BP/Castrol Techs will tell you their direct replacement.
Mobil have a product too as will most major Oil Companies

Doug;
Thanks for the confirmation. I has stumbled across the Mobil connection and product, but could not trace the Castrol connection...I was missing the BP link!

I must try to run down the substitution list and post it. First order of business is to compile a list of the "Old" stuff, then translate to "New". Just another one of those things to put on the to-do list, I guess!

Cool

Hi Sharks:

I just want to be sure that nobody quotes me about Permatex copper anti-seize. I made a mistake when I mentioned that. See: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...threadid=94362

Does anyone know of a Permatex copper? What I obtained is VersaChem copper.

Thom;
I have been follow that thread too. I do have Permatex Copper Anti-seize...info on the product on their website at http://www.permatex.com/products/pro...o=09126...cost was about $11 Cdn for the 8oz brush bottle.

And to round out the discussion, Permatex has nickel Anti-seize (http://www.permatex.com/products/pro...&item_no=77124) and the standard Aluminum/graphite variety (http://www.permatex.com/products/pro...&item_no=81464).

Seems to me the safest approach would be to use aluminum/graphite anti-seize where heat is not an issue, copper anti-seize in high heat areas and nickel anti-seize in extreme conditions. Personally, I think copper is probably good enough for 99% of the applications on my car, so if you only want to buy one product...you get the idea.

Sounds like "Optimoly" is a brand name outside of Porsche. When I got the Optimoly Olista Long-Life (Or whatever) for the clutch intermediate shaft, it came in a tube with a Porsche replacement part sticker and part number on it. (from DEVEK)

Steve,

Thanks for the good links. I have been too busy with house roof repair lately to research much.

It does look like Permatex copper is specified for aluminum, and low-mid heat. Nickel is for stainless steel, titanium, and nickel; and high heat. Regular is for non-specific metals, and low to mid heat.

Permatex says:

Permatex® Copper Anti-Seize Lubricant

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A premium quality copper anti-seize and thread lubricant that may be used to prevent seizing, corrosion and galling where high temperature conditions exist. Contains a high percentage of micro-fine copper flakes in a semi-synthetic grease carrier and is fortified with high quality rust and corrosion inhibitors. Temperature range: -30°F to 1800°F. Provides good electrical conductivity. Meets Mil Spec #907E.

Suggested Applications:
Spark plug threads installed in aluminum, exhaust manifold bolts, engine bolts, oxygen sensors, knock sensors, thermostat housing bolts, fuel filter fittings, and battery cable connections

Permatex® Nickel Anti-Seize Lubricant

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Protects metal parts from seizing and galling at temperatures up to 2400°F. It is recommended where copper contamination must be avoided, under conditions of extreme pressure and temperature, and with stainless steel, titanium and nickel alloys.

Suggested Applications:
N/A
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Permatex® Anti-Seize Lubricant

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A highly refined blend of aluminum, copper and graphite lubricants. Use during assembly to prevent galling, corrosion and seizing and to assure easier disassembly. Temperature range: -60°F to 1600°F. Salt, corrosion and moisture resistant - ideal for marine use. Non-aerosol version meets Mil Spec #907E. Level 3

Suggested Applications:
For easy removal of spark plugs, cylinder head and exhaust head bolts.
