Hope it works out. I gave it some hard thought, but the lack of garage space right now is limiting my options. I was late on a nearby property that had seven (7!) garage doors and oversized space behind each one, including a deep lift-equipped bay offset from the others. No place for K's greenhouse on the ~3 acre property so not perfect, but it's close. Of course, I'd have no ready cash to buy the car.

One quick alibi - I discovered today when I took a photo of the dash pod from above that, in fact, there are two cracks (although the one on the left is so straight I think it might be a feature).

Doc has had to go in a different direction (unrelated to the car), so the 86.5 is back on the market. Best laid plans and all that.

Doc was the perfect buyer for me because he was really knows his way around 928s and I didn't need to worry about sticking someone with a bigger project than they could handle. Hopefully there is another capable wrench out there interested.

Let me know if you have questions, want a photo of something specific, etc.

I know this is a lousy time of year to be selling a car, so if someone is keen but needs to wait until after the holidays to gather cash, pick it up, whatever - I'm sure we can work something out.

If distance or transportation is an issue, I'm happy to do whatever I need to do on this end to get it on a truck and on its way to you.

So the WP and TB are in need of replacement. What about the torque tube? Dash has some issues as shown, what about the rear quarters? Much shrinkage or warping? Overall the interior looks good and original. Thanks!

TJQuill, is this an LSD Auto?
If so I'd state that as its is a good selling point
IMO this looks to be a great refirb project (solid car) for someone to start out with, start with the mechanical and then do the Interior.

This would have been a good plan for me, but alas - life got in the way. For my 2 cents, I would go in and inspect the belt and path before doing the job. Just because the light came on is not a default reason to change it out. I would be somewhat more worried about the WP bearing since it's been sitting, but a check of the weep hole would validate that.

I was going to do these things, change fluids in the driveway, and drive it to TX provided the timing belt path looked ok. That was my plan, but to each his own. Be advised, if you do plan to drive it off in CA, you MUST have an out of state temp registration before it hits the public street in CA. Registering it in CA would require some extra fees.

Hope someone gets this back in shape. It looks like a great baseline. Sorry I couldn't follow through.

edit: I would jack up the rear, and actually check the diff for LSD before declaring it without. Many of the S3 cars had it but didn't report on the option list. I found an 86 and an 85 that both had LSD but no paper trail.

No issues with transmission or torque tube during my ownership (or engine prior to this, for that matter).

I will take a look at the rear quarters and post some photos the next time I am home during daylight. I'm sure they must not be perfect at 30 years old, but any warping or shrinkage is minor enough that it was never something I was aware of.

I think there is one other option - my understanding is that because I have PNO (planned non-operation) on file, I can get a free one-day permit to move it from one location to another (so either to the state line or to another location in California). So if someone checks it out and wants to drive it gently away, I believe I can run through DMV and grab one of these:

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1...bk/ch25/ch25_2

Registering a 30 year-old car in California is actually pretty reasonable (considering this is California where not much is reasonable). According to the DMV calculator, it would be $87 to make the registration current if someone in-state buys it, gets it running and smogged.

Perhaps it's just me, but...
What exactly is "Planned Non-Operation".
I don't think we have that designation here.
Is that a specific type of registration status?
An indication of long term storage..?
