Default Source for good tires for '87 staggered 16" Flat-dish?

Hey folks!

My early '86 came with a set of later staggered 87+ Flat dish rims. The car could use some new shoes so I was doing a quick search online and didn't find much.

Discount Tire online doesn't even show a matching set available, and Tire Rack only shows one summer tire (Toyo Proxes) and a bunch of track tires.

I'd really like a good all-season tire like a Cooper Zeon or a Pilot Sport AS since I live in a moderate climate and intend to drive the car.

What are you guys running for tires and where are you getting them? I haven't gone into a local place yet and would like some advice before I do.

FYI it shows the OE sizes to be:

(F) 225/50-16
(R) 245/45-16

Thanks!

A lot of people have gone up to 245 -50 on the rear due to lack of tires in the correct size.

Most of the time the 245-45 tires aren't available and are on back order so most fit what becomes available.

You are correct, 225/50/16 is correct for the fronts, and are available.
For the rear, 245/45/16, ....a DOT competition tire is all that I have found.
A 245/50/16 Will fit, but it looks like a cartoon.
225's can be mounted on the 8" rim, but then you'll look like a ricer.

Yeah that's what's on there now - 225's all around. I don't like the lip of the wheel showing. Gah. I wish I had the original 7 inch wheels in that case!

How about 255/45 at the rear? Could be easier to find.

Use the search tool and you will find at least 2 recent threads regarding the Toyo Proxes.

You can pick up a pair of 7" flat disc wheels pretty cheap. Probably your best choice.

Also called "Manhole Covers".

It ought be easy to score a pair of 7-inch wheels, although someone like me might insist you buy their complete set of 4. And, like mine, they may need some sort of refinishing, greatly complicated by the anodized finish. At that point, you'll start thinking about contemporary 18-inch wheels, and noticing that this is what most owners have done.

I was headed in that direction, when one of the latter owners offered me his pristine old wheels with newish tires attached. My non-pristine wheels with ancient rubber are sitting out back....

Last week I decided to give the 245/50 size a try after first considering the Toyo T1R 245/45. I outfitted my daily driver '87 rears with 245/50 16 BF Goodrich comp2 A/S

I am very happy with the 245/50 Comp 2s. I think the look is good, and the ride is real smooth and quiet.
The tires balanced perfect without hardly any weights. I think this tire size might have better production numbers so may be fresher when you get them.

For the street, I just put 225/50/16 all around. Works well, speedo is right, and no one who looks knows a thing. Also, the wider rim does let the tire open up and put more rubber onto the road.

Fortunately the PO gave me the original 7in rear wheels with the car. I think I'm going to just put those back on. If I can't take advantage of the 8" wheel I might as well go stock.

Don't know about availability, but Bridgstone brought back the Potenza RE-11 in the 245/45r16 size. They didn't do it for us S4 folks, it's the stock size for the early 930's.

The RE-11's are really sticky summer tires, probably not much use in colder climates and in my experience, they tend to get pretty "square" if you don't drive on them for a couple of days. Great for autocrossers though.

I have the Toyo T1R on my 930 and they're pretty good... available in 225/50/16 and 245/45/16. The fronts are backordered but the rears are in stock at Tire Rack, but tires-easy.com says they have them.

Unless you're looking to keep the stock look, I think the 8s in the back look good.

+1 great tire. But a MartinS tried to get them and was unable. Best to call tirerack.
