Default Identifying engine model

I am trying to find the engine model of our 928, the engine was replaced in 83' after the original was ruined in a bottom out of some sorts and it would be nice to know what it has since it has been a mystery all these years. I looked for the number as recommend by this site http://www.928motorsports.com/identification.php but could only locate 4 numbers. I'm not sure if that is all of them or if the location might be different but i'm not having any luck so hopefully someone with more knowledge can help

I have read somewhere that when engines were changed as yours was the motor numbers were not the same but I can not remember what it said on it. I have a bad case of crs. I am fairly certain I read about in here.search

Nope, it's the full thing, just checked again and cleaned it off once more to make sure, very confusing

That was another thought, possible they use different numbers on replacement engines, might take her down to the dealership were the engine was changed and see if they happen to have anything on it all these years later.

I do believe you will find out more here than at a dealership. I could be wrong, just give it a while there are some brilliant people here. I am not one of them.

Pretty sure that's going to be a replacement block from Porsche. It doesn't follow the standard coding and those numbers have some meaning to Porsche when an engine is replaced by a dealer.

I've got a replacement block. There's no number whatsoever on the square pad.

If I had to guess (and it'd be irresponsible not to speculate) that pad got stamped by the shop that replaced the engine. We can further guess what that number means. I'm going with 0542 is for May, 1942 and is the birthdate of the mechanic who replaced the engine.

The pic looks to show a typical L-jet FI system typical of a 4.7L 1983 US engine. It's got the "spider" intake, doesn't it?

That would be quite cool if it is a little note on the birthday or something like that, will be for sure finding out what dealership did the block replacement ,hopefully tomorrow, cause I would like to know the history. It should be nothing more than a 4.7 83' the car is not an S and I do believe it has the spider looking intake.
