New 928 owner, dunno what I'm doin..
Hello.Hello! I just did one of the most petulant and brash things of my life. I bought a Porshe 928 knowing almost nothing at all what I'm getting into and I am not at all mechanically inclined. My brother, also a Porsche owner (he told me about this site), warned me to do my homework first, but I just couldn't help myself. One night I'm browsing Craigslist and the next morning I'm handing over a check. I DON'T EVEN KNOW what questions to ask!!! So, I guess the first question to ask is, what questions should I be asking? The second question I suppose is, does anyone know a good place I can take this for upkeep in the Austin, TX area?
Some basics (I'll post pictures later):
1980
147K miles
White with tan interior
I'm the third owner (Austin, Texas)
second owner only had it for one year (Houston, Texas)
first owner was in Syracuse, New York (I think he was the first owner)
Problems
The AC kicks out air, but it is not cold. Hoping it's just a Freon service
The oil pressure needle is pegged at full as soon as the car starts
There is a thin line of rust along the bottom of the back left window
But everything else works! It drives great. It even has an operable phone in it! Hahaha! I really dig this car. I just hope I didn't buy a maintenance nightmare. So far so good. I figure with a little support from those of you in-the-know, this could continue to be a great car experience for me.

Update. I took the car in for the AC servicing. I am sure I got ripped off. AC works, but now the radio doesn't and the car phone doesn't turn on anymore. (They also broke the AC fan, which I replaced as I couldn't prove that they broke it)(They said they could not find the part anywhere so they tried to get me to go through the Porsche dealer for a $500 fan. I found one on Ebay for $90 in literally 15 seconds!). When I picked the car up, they were charging the battery as it wouldn't start. Before I took it to these clowns, I had let the car sit for two weeks and it started just fine. I'm heading home today and I fully expect that the battery will be dead after the four days that I've been away. Seems these clowns gave me some electrical problems rooting around fixing the AC. I really need a good mechanic in Austin that I can trust and won't bleed me dry.
Getting worried that I really have no business owning a car like this.

Well, you are in the right state (yes, double entendre intended), lots of good guys down there. Second, if that car lived in Syracuse New York, look at everything made of steel with a jaundiced eye. A good inspection from beneath will be necessary- i.e. get 'er on a lift. They don't call it Salt City for nothing...

Wow now you are a brave man. But I like your "ahh what the heck" nature. After all these are just toys. Yes they need proper attention to run right, but don't stress out over it. You can get up to speed on any issues here. Because you are not mechanically inclined, a mechanic familiar with the 928 (not just any Porsche mechanic) will be key for you.

Welcome to Rennlist and just do what was mentioned earlier, read up as much as possible in the visitor topic/thread...and you will be fine (okay, not sure if I said that with a straight face or not...lol).
Good luck, with your new ride. Sounds like things aren't off to a very good start (A/C wise). But, things will get better with knowledge of the 928. A lot of helpful folks here.

If he's near you, I would not hesitate a second to bring your car to his shop.
It would be in very good hands.

Welcome! We have similarities into our dive into 928 ownership. I knew less than nothing about working on a car when I bought mine-with the help of this board and the other passionate 928 owners I've been able to make some good strides in keeping this old crusty automobile on the road. Be prepared for an outlay of cash to get it caught up on deteriorated parts (especially fuel lines).
There are extensive write ups with pictures that can guide you through just about anything here and on Pelican Parts. You're going to love the 928! It's an amazing car and the burble of the V8 is such a nice sound. Post pics!!

Congratulations! You have a bit of a learning curve ahead of you, but if you are still loving the car in a month or two you have been bitten by the 928 bug. If the oil pressure pegged on a cold start...that is a good thing. With the correct weight oil in the engine the oil pressure often seems high. It will drift down as the oil warms up and then more at idle. I've gotten so used to it that I've forgotten the numbers...but underway you should see it in the middle/upper part of the gauge all the time.
