Default Sunroof - perfect one moment, stuck the next

Got to wonder about my (our) cars sometime.

I closed my sunroof and parked for a few hours. Now, when trying to open the roof, right rear of the panel drop down, the left doesn't.

Pressing down on the left rear and pressing the switch doesn't move it either.

Any black magic tips available? or do I look at a weekend removing headliners etc?

Thanks

remove the motor cover and turn the transmission joint coupler my guess is the gear has broken in the transmission
If so then remove the transmission and use a screw driver to move the cables tto verify they both move
report what you find

It's not that bad of a job. Like everything, just takes some patience and some time.

If you are going to clean the cables and their channels, I posted a method a while back, involving a drill, a rag and some degunking solution. Worked like a charm. I can find it if you are going to clean 'em.

Thanks Ryan

If you can find it , it will be appreciated. As they say, while you are in there you may as well clean!

I used Ryan's drill/rag trick on the cables. Together with cleaning old grease on tracks it took several seconds off my sunroof open/close time (and ok, a couple of days out of my life), and sounded quieter and happier. The trickiest part is re-attaching the liner to sliding panel. Magnetised screwdriver helped

While on the subject of sunroofs, I have mine removed to get it repainted.

Is there a tutorial out there that describes replacing the seal around the outside edge of the sunroof panel?

Thanks.

Here's an extract from "Nichols" tip's...,

To install a new seal around the sunroof, first remove the rain channel at the back of the roof, held on by (3) phillips head screws. Flip the sunroof over and pull out the old seal. This is in 2 pieces as you will plainly see. The seal is compressed into a channel surrounding the whole sunroof. Pull the seal out directly away from the roof. Inspect the channel for any left over pieces of rubber or trash.

With the new seal (2 pieces), start with the front (long) seal. Fold it in 2 and find the center. With the felt side up, insert the barbed rubber edge of the seal into the front center of the sunroof. (a little saliva helps it slip in pretty easily) Do one side at a time. Work the seal in one direction all the way around the side and the back, then do the otherside starting at the center. (I found that after a few attempts to get the seal to fit correctly when installed, you will need to stretch the seal around the sunroof, since it will be thicker than the seam of the sunroof and fixed roof. This may not be necessary for your car.) Make sure that the front seal reaches around to the back of the sunroof by an inch or more on the straight edge. Take the back seal now and install it. The back seal is thicker and has an extra rubber channel. Cut to fit flush with front seal. Insure that the seal is seated all the way around. Re-install rear rain channel.

At last I have time to get to this job.

I removed the cover and disconnected the motor. Checked that the motor work - it does.

Then tried manually opening the sunroof. Got stuck exactly as with the motor. The one rear corner drop while the other doesn't. Then it jams.

I removed the gearbox. The gear on the back is intact, no broken teeth. Also, turning the input shaft turn the gear.

Looking at where the gear mesh with the cables look clean with no signs of damage.

Also, the sunroof is closed.

Any suggestions on next steps will be much appreciated.

Thanks.
ps. Must be the most comfortable job I have done to date on the 928. Those rear seats are surprisingly accommodating.

looks like the transition block is not moving back,
this is what lets the roof drop,
try prying the cable for the left side back see if the roof drops,
you are going to need to open the roof about 6 inches to remove the inner liner,
then you will be able to see whats going on
