Nice paint, nice wheels, and semi nice interior. Reasonable price for a 5 spd.

Now there's a deal, especially for someone wanting to get their 'feet wet' in the 928 world...

Asking $4300, selling around $4000-ish. At the risk of popping one of Roger's arteries, bottom feeder says - a fair price. Not the deal of the century, but an excellent starting point for someone to grab a 928 in a nice color with good bones. Remember, this is the weak 5 speed and is running out of economic parts avail.

Check for LSD before buying, and look carefully at your ability to fix the int, dash, pod, and the elec gremlins then make an offer. I will deliver for gas and a plane ticket if you buy it.

Docmirror, Can you elaborate on your comment about a weak 5 speed? Can you point me towards a source for additional info? Many thanks.

Actually, it depends on which trans is in the car. It may be a G28-05, or a G28-09. The 05 trans has the older baulk rings, and is just not as robust as later trans that take higher HP engines. If it's an 09, it would be better as there were running improvements along the way, and the 09 might be pretty good actually. Gotta get under the car, and look for the casting stamp to be sure. For either one, if I shifts smooth and doesn't grind going into 2nd or 3rd it'll do the job.

Having owned a car with a G28.05 and driven another with one, it is what I would describe as an idiosynchratic transmission. I reject the notion that all are, by the way. I've owned over a dozen cars with manual transmissions so I have a palate to compare against. There are some great things about manual 928's -- I think the shifter itself and the pattern is excellent. The weak reverse lockout, for example, is not so great. Or the weaker synchros in the early cars. This transmission feels halfway between an old manual and a more modern G50 like you might find in a 911.

Due to the neglected nature of many of these cars compared to the style of exotic maintenance program they *should* have, a lot of these transmissions have suffered quite a beating over the years. The dual disc clutch must be adjusted properly so that the clutch is totally disengaged as you're changing gears. That's one thing that you can do to help.

edit: all that said I'd still take a manual 928 any day over an auto.

If you are comfortable driving a car and truly paying attention to and understanding shifting gears and matching, as best as possible, your revs these early cars may be your thing. It is not a car that you can/should just simply quickly row gears in. The early gearboxes use a Porsche 356 derived "C" synchro ring and really they are under engineered in my opinion. There were improvements along the way.

Parts for these gearboxes are exorbitantly expensive or not available so just do your homework and feel it out. Hope this helps. I'm not trying to scare you away from a 928 with an early 5 speed just trying to get you to think about it.

Thanks for your reply rlich8. I hope that at least the parts needed for a clutch service do not fall into your aforementioned "exorbitantly expensive or not available" category.

Definitely available but not cheap. About $1200 from 928intl for two discs, pressure plate, and release bearing. Does not include intermediate plate. The intermediate plate can sometimes need machining and or adjustment. Some people weld them. The H adjusters are a weak point on this part, take special attention. Carl Fausett rebuilds them for $720. 928intl gets $1200 for that plate. It depends how nice you want it to feel, how much you want to wear the trans. Me personally, I like to be as close to perfect as possible.

Again not trying to scare you away just trying to inform you. Buying these cars right is important. The market is less fluid than that of 911's and values fluctuate wildly so the recent eBay price may not be a good gauge.

The above car seems nice, by the way. I'd consider it myself.

I've never heard of "h adjusters" - can you elaborate? How do I check these on a manual 928?

Here are a number of pieces of literature on the topic:

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...revisited.html

http://jenniskens.livedsl.nl/Technic...5/MyTip583.htm

http://www.nichols.nu/tip733.htm

Only applies to cars with dual disc clutches which this car originally had.

You're getting really good advice here! Manual 928 transmissions aren't my favorite but if the transmission checks out based on the guidance you're getting here, the car it's a deal!
