Remove it and be sure you replace the external with the later version.

I've been trying to find an aftermarket pump that has a small enough O.D. to fit through the threaded hole, that could be grafted onto the threaded cap of a scrap factory in-tank pump. No luck so far. I've talked with one of the engineers at Aeromotive regarding their products, and the smallest they have is about .100" too large. I think the best bet is to put in a strainer and get the later external, or upgrade to the 044 pump.

The Bosch 044 is a possible replacement, but doesn't it draw noticeably more power than the OE pump? What changes should be made to the fuel pump wiring to support the 044 properly? Thinking about it, I suspect that information is available here already with a search.

Fit a strainer and gasket + the correct hose strainer to pump - fit a pump from the 87/88 cars.
Murph has a strainer kit with a larger orifice which may help as well.
