With that much rust showing.....that car is done !!! plus 84 parts have little value. Parting out a car takes time and usually annoys the neighbors
Not worth having it towed home unless you just want to take one apart for fun.....

 

Have to second what Brian says here. The amount of rot alone is reason to to see this car only as parts. Too many projects out there without the rust issues to take this one on. No real upside here.

 

some must die so that others may live - this one is toast. There are much better platforms to start with than this example. Good luck either way.

 

 

Whatever you decide don't let the owner send it to the crusher! Lots of good parts on there.

When you said "long term project" were you thinking months or years? This is a multi-year project that in the end will cost you more to restore than a lot of other 928s you may find in the sub $2k range and more than it'll cost you to buy a drivable one today. However, there is something altruistic about bringing a car back that everyone else would turn there back on. All depends on your goals and motivations....and bank account.

 

The tin worm's work makes me change my mind. Parts car only.

A parts car was my fear the more I looked at it. It's good to check with people who know before walking away though. A gentleman I know just picked up a K code 1966 Mustang that had been ignored in back of a house for years because it needed a ton of work.

I know what you mean. I was thinking of this as a multi year project, which I have done in the past. I have brought back a few old vehicles that were rough, and it can be rewarding to see them come together. Right now though, I'd rather start with a more solid car. I'm not in a rush, and in reality need to get rid of one or two vehicles to make space for another project. This one just popped up, and I thought I'd check it out while I had the opportunity.

I'm sure I'll find one down the road, especially since I am now more open to the automatic cars. For years I refused to drive or look at any auto, but that's slowly changing.

I'm one of the biggest proponents of rising 928 values on Rennlist, but a 928 is no where near the collectable cache of a K code 66 Stang (which is sad, but true). Maybe someday. But not now. As more of these cars die off and rust away, then the remaining ones will rise in value. The car you looked at was $50000 away from being a $20K car.

 

If they have someone willing to pay over a thousand for that, they should take it.

You, however, shouldn't.

That car, sadly, isn't going to run again. Too long neglected, too far gone, too much time, effort and money to get it going again.

 

Agree with those who say RUN away. strike one, terminal rust in many places, strike two, interior completely trashed, strike three engine and driveline unknown, strike four not a particularly desirable or collectable year And I have owned 2 '84's and I like them...but this one is toast and will not part out at enough $$$ to justify dragging it home and taking it apart.

 

No reason to buy any 928 with that much rust showing, probably much more hidden, unless it has desirable parts. This one does not. Free would still be expensive.

after seeing the pictures of the car you posted i would suggest the next car you look at is parked in someones garage,
and it was driven into the garage to get it there,
looking in fields and junk yards is not the best idea for buying a 928

Smart money says to buy the best car you can ,
with the most updated new parts list attached to it.
and yes I would read the FAQ at the top of the page,
before you open your wallet

 

I think the closer inspection shocked me a bit, as I remember seeing this car when it was on the road. At the time it looked to be in pretty good shape. It's hard to believe it has been 10 years, as it seems like it was only a few years ago.

Thanks again for the replies. As I said, I have a soft spot for wanting to bring back neglected cars. That can get me in trouble, and I appreciate everyone's thoughts on this.

I also went back through the 928 FAQ, and found the links to pre-buy, body, engine. etc...
