My 82 has no cutout or marking in that location, but my GTS does. Here's a close up the one on the GTS. It's not stamped with a number punch, but looks like its been done to a number template with a mechanical needle punch engraver.
Here's mine. The ZZZ freaked me out for a sec. Thought Brian may have jinxed my car into actually being stolen before I found that it was common for US spec cars to get the ZZZ stamp in the chassis. Phewww!

Nate, the ZZZ is a Euro spec designation. US cars do not have that.

I agree Ed, but not on the chassis VIN. I did some thread searching and ZZZ were stamped on the chassis before they knew what country the car was headed to.
My 83 has the number stamped in the portion of the chassis that is uncovered by the aluminum fender sheet metal. That way if I ever have to have fender replaced, The chassis serial number stays in place.
