Not bad for a parts car

Just buy a used engine if this one is no good. They only cost a few hundred for one of this gen anyway and service it using the parts the PO included in the sale.
Also, this engine is non interference so you could just buy a used head, have both rebuilt and stick it back onto the bottom end without issue.
This one is way too nice to part out. 2 out of 3 things in this car are sorted, the last is the drive train.

Agreed with all the preservationist theories.
And, I think all Porsches are special. And deserve to live if possible.
The really special ones, with minimal body problems, interior problems, and only needing mechanical issues sorted, ARE the ones that pull on my heart. 200,000 miles ? So what? That's nothing on this class of sports car. Kept in good form it will easily look great and run at least another 200,000. And your dollar amount invested will still be marginal; almost like a small windfall.
Remember about a year ago what a million mile original owner speedster brought ? Mileage mattered not, it was a part of that car's story. Granted these will never be as sought out as a speedster, but the point I am making is the miles become irrelevant if the car retains it's patina in above average condition.
Keep it, repair it, cherish it for what it is. And be thankful you have so little invested in a premium sports car which was one of the most expensive sports cars sold back in it's day.

...The only question I have for you is are you sure it's an '84? Those door panels look to be pre-S style with the perforated hole for the single upper speaker. Do the doors have the proper pockets for dual speaker door panel? My '84 has the dual upper speakers, not the perforation...
It must have lived inside all these years. Your interior is in much better shape than mine and most.
IMO, you have a keeper, and it'd be a shame to cannibalize an interior like that. Don't be that P.O.
The 84's were non-interference. If the engine turns over you could do a leakdown to guesstimate the innards.

Cannibalizing an interior is pointless.. both cars suffer for it in terms of value IMO.
Properly refurb the original interior in the 79, and get this car working - you'll have an awesome driver and an early car with a mint restored interior.
The perforated panels comes down to options.. my '87 has them too as it was ordered without the amplified 8-speaker system, altho' its the latest car I've seen with them (it was also ordered without the auto gearbox and without a sunroof.. got to love purist OO's

Quick flip? I mean you can repair the engine and bring maintenance up to date pretty easily with the engine out. Put it all back together and sell whole. I know these cars are not built for profit but it's a viable option if you don't get too carried away with the work needed.

Alright the masses have spoken. Enough collective wisdom and experiences have convinced me to keep it whole. However, I feel like an a$$hole for backing out a deal to sell the engine and jetronic pack at the last minute. The guy is very passionate about buying those parts from the car.
I will hold off rehabbing this car until after my '78 is up and running with the euro s engine.
Stay tune.....
