Why is it so big? That's easy.

According to Porsche, it was for the upgrading over the years. Started out at 4.5 liters and ended at 5.4 liters. The 6.5 liter rebore/rebuild is fact and makes for a 500+ HP monster.

Now, the WHOLE engine is aluminum. Aluminum under heat and stress moves, or warps easily as compared to iron or steel. Porsche, with it's decades of expertise, knew that the engine walls and castings had to be much larger than a conventional block.

With upgrading in mind and durability, that is the basic reasons it is such a large engine. Even the old 4.5 liters can be bored out to 6 liters easily, what domestic can do that without restroking?

And for information, even bored out to 6.5 liters, the stock cooling system stays in place. That's German engineering!
