Default WTB: Oil pan

FOUND! Thanks! Looking for a late oil pan for my 88 S4. Cash or PK-trade.

Will be doing a monster WYAIT front end job soon. Rack, upper control arms, Bilsteins, motor mounts, oil pan, starter, etc. (Now that I think about it, I should probably get a GTS baffle, too.)

Original oil pan must have been damaged along with the A/C mounts because it has an early one...with stripped drain plug threads. (Note homemade 16V hole cover.)

I have a couple and would opt for PK trade.

I'll even toss in an used AC compressor bracket. :-)

Kevin - cool!

This is the first big job I've done for a long while. I hope to think of some new tools. At least a custom fit engine lifter.

I'm also trying out some motor mounts I think will fit. (Hopefully not just another expensive test. ) They are 80mm like the stock 928, AFAIK. The stock M3 mounts have the locating pin in the wrong spot, but the aftermarket ones usually do not have a pin. I figure the poly ones would melt so I went for the 'fast road' aluminum ones (still waiting for purchase confirmation, from England).

Ken, I'd be game for a PK trade if you'd like too.

I've got a bunch of them.

Thx Colin. I got hold of Adam and Tom in Seattle. They have a couple, so I just need to mosey up there. (In my BMW - the S4 steering is just too bad anymore.)

Got a nice late pan from Adam. Hopefully it was one that Tom was saving because he was too BUSY to come for a quick lunch. Thanks again, guys.

Took them a while to respond to the order but the fancy M3 motor mounts are supposed to be shipped tomorrow. Fingers crossed that they fit!

$330/pair + $15 shipping (the very firm 'competition' version is $354)

Hopefully Hans will find a way to make his. They looked pretty cool, but from my own experiences, I'm afraid it will be hard to get enough demand to keep making them.

This place only makes mounts and there are lots of Beemers...

Thanks Ken, do you have a model number for that mount you got?
how does it compare to the factory mount or the Volvo mounts in height?
any idea how much crush it has?

Stan, links and more info above in post #3.

New M3 (E30 S14) mounts appear to be the same height, ca. 80mm, as the 928. Obviously the 928 engine is significantly heavier at 582lb/264kg (S4) minus 234lb/106kg (S14) equals +348lb/158kg , but the Volvo mounts seem to be working fine. (FWIW, the VT mounts are stiffer than stock and not fluid filled.)

For reference, new Volvo mounts are ca. 90mm tall. Weight is 375lb/170kg (B230).

The price for the VT mounts are for a pair, IE. $165/ea. The second BMW part number above is the factory motorsports solid mount which costs about the same as a factory 928 mount, ca. $350/ea. The M3 fluid filled mount is ca. $100/ea. Might be able to use the factory M3 mounts by cutting off the location pin?

The pan I got came with one.

I'm going to replace the bolts with flange head and plenty of Loctite, though.

Now that I have a good pan I am thinking about a pan spacer which leads to, of course, thinking why can't I make a whole new pan out of sheet metal?

More volume by virtue of thinner steel and I can put fancy doors and what-nots in it...

Anyone have a cad file they are willing to share before I start measuring?

Actually, I just need to measure a little with the help of Mike's pic:

If you make a new pan, have a built in crush rings for the pan gasket so the bolt can not be over torqued with the silicone gasket.

if you make one and use a pan spacer as the flange you can do without the dimples for the rear main bolts... I would be up for something like that as it would give me better clearance for the mini starter...
