Right...I didn't mean bright silver...it more or less matched the inside of my water bridge. Good thing it is magnetic, as when it inevitably bounded down the rabbit hole to the water pump, I was able to retrieve it (after a panicked post on RL) with an extendable magnet.

Put a rag in that hole, people!

I've removed plenty of those sealing rings that were 15-20 years old and have never seen one that was showing a bunch of metal. I gotta bet that super-old coolant or the wrong coolant causes the coating to degrade at a much-more rapid pace.

Well, if you take a peek at what was left of the head gaskets and the pitting on the head in my other thread you might find confirmation of your theory.

The final insult was that the metal ring took chunks of the plastic impeller making it useless. Otherwise that was a very nice waterpump.

Here's a picture.

Wonder where all the missing plastic went?

Pulled the coolant drain plugs nothing appeared. I think it is in the bottom of the right side tank. Interestingly enough that one failed pressure test and is being replaced. I'll see what my radiator shop finds.

Could be stuck in the head somewhere too. You need to find all the pieces.

Found a couple of pieces of the plastic impeller in the cylinder water jacket. That along with all the missing head gasket material.
Here's one:
