So I picked up a real nice 2 owner 1979, was a non-runner, but a green wire and fuel pump fixed that. Very nice original 80k mile car.
The only glaring problem was the original owner got the car Rustproofed (can only imagine the 'upsell' on that - 'We will coat the aluminum and galvanized panels in black goo so it won't rust - guaranteed not to rust through for $500!') well now 37 years later I want to remove this crap. NOt too concerned about it underneath but the goo in the engine bay is going too far - needs to come off...Anyone have any ideas that would make this a less heinous job? Perhaps something that would dissolve the goo but not damage the underlying original paint? Kerosene, Mineral Spirits, Acetone, gasoline, Xylene? I was thinking of maybe laying down towels soaked in something that would dissolve the coating over time, but not sure where to start.
Don't even know where to start on this one...Any ideas are appreciated.
It is possibly waxoil or something similar. A lot of people recommend white spirits or perhaps a paint safe tar remover. If it is hard it may soften with a heat gun. I use
Autoglym Engine Cleaner on my engine with good results but I'm not sure it would cut through that.
Depending on the climate and condition of the roads there are a lot of bits that do rust on a 928. Rear quarters, fuel lines, suspension etc. I use oil based rust inhibitor on mine rather than wax based.
Beautiful car Alex and a nice score! Wouldn't keeping the rust proofing provide the best "originality" of the car? JK. Sorry nothing constructive here to add from me. I am just a dummy trying to leech info.
Grew up in NW Missouri where roads are black oil and crushed limestone so always got tar on car in the summer. Had good results with the old Turtle Wax Bug and Tar remover, heard they recently changed to formula so not sure about the new stuff.
get a paint brush and some kerosene,
brush it on in the sun and then repeat every 20 mins,
this will loosen the stuff so you can wipe it off with used T shirts,
wear gloves
I've never tried the turtle wax remover stuff, but I've used mineral spirits with good results. As thick as that undercoating is...you do have your work cut out for you...or one of the teenagers.
Congratulations, on another 928...I knew you'd end up with a red one sooner or later...since it is...the fastest color and all.
