Default Cam Cover Bolt - Weird

Have a 1985 US 32 Valve. I was checking all the 13mm Cam Cover bolts for the correct torque of 7 ft-lbs when I ran across the right front middle bolt and discovered it was a 10mm. Barely moved the torque wrench on it and felt it snap! And here's what came out!

Right front Cam Cover Bolt hole

Strange 10mm bolt with end cylindrical offset plug

Any ideas as to what happened to the original 13mm bolt and why this was shoved in there? And what am I stuck doing now to repair this??

Thanks,

Paul

No Ideas what a PO did (anything is possible), but if you want to correct it, the cover will need to be removed and you will most likely find sheared off bolts in the head that will need to be drilled and tapped.
The correct stock cover bolts are a two part bolt and if not installed correctly they seize together and break as your original bolt most likely did.

Most here would replace the stock 85/86 with the updated S4 single part bolt and correct washers and seals.

****ty design, those adapters snap at a bkink of an eye. Porsche fixed with the 86.5, get a set of those if you can

Are the S4 bolts a straight drop-in? Opinions are mixed, it seems. I've got 2 of them about to go in and am curious about what to expect.

The cam covers are different S3 to S4 so you will need the correct seals or the bolt heads will leak.
Best to source the 86.5's as suggested for "straight drop in's", else you will need S4 bolts, corrected washers and seal rings that match up S4 bolt heads to S3 Cam covers.

S4 bolts are a direct replacement after you remove the brass standoff.
You need to also use the S4 hardware as well - spacer washer, cup washer and grommet.
85/86 uses 24 total - 18 x short and 6 x long

None of the old hardware is reused.
