Default Power Seat Question

I'm a new owner (88 S4) and the drivers seat does not go up and down. It does go forward and back. The previous owner had some seat motor parts in the box of stuff he gave me, so it seems he tried to fix it. Two questions (1) is there a manual adjustment for the up and down? (2) Can someone direct me to past links for repair/replacement of this problem? Thanks

Hi are you sure it's the motor?
I usually see the switch fail first, I did a search and this one came up.
Also I'd pull the fuse for that seat (right and left) as the power is hot w/ key off and you could smoke it when taking the switch apart.

I Had the same issue on my passenger seat and was sure it was the switches. Saw a thread about deoxit fixing window switches. Saturated the switches with it. Worked like a champ.

^^^ yep. Easiest fix ever and the first I attempted on the 928. Grab a can and douse all connections.

While the posts generally support switches (lots of success stories there), in my case it was a failed seat control relay. But regardless the first step is cleaning the switch, which, if you're careful with fluids around carpet and leather, can be done without removing the seat.

If you have memory seats (do all 88's?), the switches indirectly control the seat through relays.

The relays are sadly not available individually and have to be purchase as part of the seat wiring harness. Someone has been posting a used harness on eBay for months should you need to go that route.

There is a manual adjuster but only for forward and backward, to allow the sear to be removed.
It's an allen key hole under the front. Be VERY gentle with it, the plastic gear teeth strip easily.

Thanks for the hints...I'll go the cleaning/relay route first.

Another vote on blasting the switch first, in an emergency when you haven't got a switch cleaner to hand, WD40 will most likely work.

Probably. On the other hand Deoxit is fairly cheap and two days away via Amazon.

I've found it in local guitar shops as well. Seems to be pretty popular for amp maintenance.
