Default Rearview Mirror Needed

So I broke my mirror. Turns out there are some positions you should not try in the 928 ... anyway, rather than glue the thing together, does someone have a cheap used one you're willing to send me (PM please)? I really just need the stalk. I had a spare but threw it away because ... how often do you need these

H, That would have to be an extreme position to hit the rear view mirror. Congratulations on your abilities at your age!

I am going to eventually replace all of my center mirrors with Boxster mirrors which have a much better shape for the view out the back. They are usually available on eBay for about $20 and sometimes you can find them with the mounting tab that glues to the windshield.

Jerry I agree the later 911 and other models have of course superior materials and design in this type of thing, and I also think you're going down the right path. The question is: will the mirror mount to our windshield mount? I suppose anything will do, once you glue its disc. Good thinking

Heinrich, the mounting tab on the windshield is different. I would take it to to auto glass shop and have them remove the original tab and then glue the Boxster one in place. Or I would remove the original tab myself by using a large soldering iron right on the tab. That will probably run the heat through the tab into the glue, but not into the glass. When the glue is soft enough it will release the tab with a sharp edge under it.

Heinrich, I'm glad to see you here every now and then. I just noticed that we both joined RL in January of 2003........over 13 years ago. You have 16,100 more posts than I do and you've been mostly MIA for several years! Of course, you do have that good looking young son to spend time with now instead all that time here on the forum, but its always nice to see you post. BTW, which 928 do you still have?

Got a comparison showing the Boxster vs. the 928 mirror, Jer?

Following Jerry's advice, I have just bought a genuine Porsche Boxster mirror on ebay p/n 996 731 511 00 complete with mounting pad for small money. My original just fell off about a week ago so his post was very opportune for me.

I haven't put one in a 928 yet, but here is a picture of a couple of them I have been saving up. You can make your own comparison from this picture. It is important to buy one with the WS tab or button since they are not the same as the 928.

Even if the one you buy comes with the button still mounted in the mirror, and with shards of broken glass, you can remove the button then hold the button in the flame of your gas stove or torch and soften the glue so that you can remove the glass pieces with your pocket knife. Remove the button with a stiff slim flat blade of some sort. It will damage the paint on the edge of the mounting base, but that can't be helped. Later the mirror will be mounted by twisting it 90 degrees onto the button. Be sure to mount the button on the WS in the correct orientation.

I just bought another one of these with the glass shards showing in the eBay picture, and for $22, including shipping. I like these mirrors, because , as I mentioned above, they are shaped almost exactly like the image of and out the rear window of the 928.

Thank you, John, for your post. I find it rare that anyone, even clients, ever actually follow my adviCe. But recently I did get a nice thank you card from a lady who I had previously given some free adviCe, which she had followed to some success. That too was a first--following my adviCe and the card I mean, not the success. Thanks again and good luck with the mirror.

More adviCe:

When shopping for this mirror on eBay, you will see a lot of them listed but not showing the back. Do not assume that they are all being sold with the mounting post attached since many of them are not. You really do need all three pieces--the mirror itself, the mounting post, and the windshield tab or button.
