Ignition Switch & Wheel Locked 1985 A/T
I have pulled the transmission and had it rebuilt. I also rebuilt the torque tube with Constantine's bearings and super clamp. While I was at it, I rebuilt the rear suspension and brakes. Everything turned freely when I rotated the fly wheel upon re-assembly. I then decided to rebuild the front end suspension, motor mounts, oil pan, brakes, and a bunch of other little stuff. (2 years later)
I am just re-assembling front end. I hooked up the steering rack, which I had completely removed, including the knuckle. I thought I would turn the wheel a few time back and forth, before tightening the two bolts that lock the knuckle onto the two shafts to insure proper placement. Went to turn the key and nothing. Its locked. The steering wheel is locked, also. I tried in all the different gear positions and twisted the wheel back and forth between the 2 locked positions. Nothing. Key won't turn at all. Even shot some WD 40 into the key switch.
The car currently does not have the battery, starter, alternator, or AC pump connected. There is no brake fluid or power steering fluid in it. I did try stepping down on the brake also. Its got to be something simple, but I have been reading different posts using search and I cannot find it.
Any help from the brain trust would be appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have another key to try?
the only thing that the key does is unlock the ignition and steering,
nothing else has anything to do with this function .IE brake pedal or shifter or battery power
does the key go all the way into the ignition cylinder? verify by putting the key into the door lock.
at any rate do not force things as expensive parts can be damaged

Have you tried applying a bit of pressure on the steering wheel, in either direction, while turning the ignition key, to relieve any pressure against the locking mechanism? Or is the knuckle binding the action of the steering column?
Not much lies in the way of stopping the key from being turned.
Brian.

Thanks. Had not had time to work on issue since post. I got to thinking about Merlins question. I forgot to mention I installed a dash and pod preformed cover from 928 International during this long process. You know when u have spent to many hours in garage on a simple problem this was it. The pod cover was prevent the key from completely inserting. Duh. Little rework and all is better. Sorry. I should have walked away an hour earlier and came back another day
