Default Brakes noise.

Just put the Jaeger smart mount in the car and took it out for a test, The vibration is mostly gone so now to put in new motormounts, But on my return home I heard a grinding noise from the front, at first thought it was something in the new fix. but it seems to come from the front right wheel, more like pads. What is the best pad to use and what other suggestions as what else to do ? Car is 83 S.

Thanks

Richard

Best pad is just a matter of opinion......I use Mintex......or may be called Metal Masters now. Good, low cost street pad with little dust. Make sure you use the Porsche brake silencer disks......they work wonders, and you probably should turn the disks or get new ones if needed.

Brake pads are a compromise always . You can have great high speed braking , no fade , long pad life , low dust , no squeek , long rotor life , moderate price ............just not all of them in the same pad !!

Where can I get the brake silencer pads? I put the stock pads on my car. They didn't come with any such pads. Are they separate or supposed to come attached to the pads?

I can't stand that squeal! It does seem that frequent washing of the wheels and calipers will reduce or even eliminate the sound temporarily.

Big Dave they do not exist prior to the 1986 1/2 with Brembo 4 piston brakes . You can use the "sticky brake quiet goo" to glue the metal backing of the pad to the piston / caliper . It also helps if there is no lip or ridge around the outside of the rotor from prior wear , you can grind it off using a drill and disc sander rather easily; spin the rotor on the hub with one hand hold the sander at an angle to only hit the edge of the rotor be sure to do do both sides .

The brake goo doesn't work. I've applied it twice. The sound stopped for a few weeks then returned. I'll remove the lip....I know one is there.

There are teflon self adhesive pads out there that I have used on my MBZ and they work great. However I don't think Porsche ever used them. You could just cut some to fit.

Default Anti Squeal Liners

Get the Anti Squeal Liners from Performance Products:

http://www.performanceproducts.com/P...producttype=20

"Silence That Embarrassing Brake Squeal - The vibration that causes disc brake squeal is absorbed by our vulcanized fiber-backed liners. Trim to the size of your pad and apply this pressure-sensitive liner to the pad's backing plate."

I bought my GTS in March of this year. The previous owner had just put Porsche factory pads all around. Squealed like crazy and left lots of brake dust in a short amount of time. I'm an audio engineer, so I was determined to fix the squealing problem. I researched the hell out of brake pads online. I decided to go with the HAWK High Performance Street Pads, but at the same time, I got new cast-holed rotors all around, new sensors, brake lines, and Porsche factory shims. Bought it all from 928 Specialists http://www.928gt.com/ for a great price and got very friendly service (thanks Janie!). I was hoping that all this would solve the squealing, but it didn't. However, the brake dust was minimal compared to the factory pads.

I had seen the anti squeal liners in the Performance Products catalog before, so I tried them. I had to get a new set of Porsche shims. You cut the liners to fit your pad's backing, put the shims on top, and what do you know? This actually worked! Every once in a great while I still get a squeal, but nowhere near the loudness or duration of previous squealing. I can't guarantee it will work with other combinations of pads and rotors, but this combo has made me very happy. Oh, and the Hawks stop pretty damn good, too!

Good luck and if you try it, let us know if they work for you!

I just installed Mintex pads on the front of my S4 and the squeal is worse than ever. Then I installed some anti-squeal adhesive backed aluminum strips from AutoZone and made no difference. The red Permatex goo doesn't work either. Now I will try the Porsche damper discs. I seem to remember a post by Jim Bailey recommending beveling the leading edge of the pads? The rotors do have a lip and one is warped. I got two turned rotors from eBay that are nice and true but 1.5mm under the minimum acceptable thickness. Are these safe to use on the street - no racing? What are the dangers?
