Default Shock Q

Hi, I have an '89 S4 auto with sport suspension that has (I think) the original red Boge shocks. I have around 86k miles and am thinking it's time to replace them. What are your thoughts on Koni's (internally v. externally adjustable), Boge's and Bilsteins. My car is bone stock, and I drive pretty conservatively. I like the stock sport suspension ride and don't want anything too harsh.

Any advice is much appreciated. Many thanks,

Steve

I replaced the Boge Reds on my '89 with Bilsteins at about 125k - not because they were worn out, but because I liked the Bilsteins on my '82 and I was able to score a new set of Bilsteins at a time when the Bilsteins had been NLA for some time (I think they have since become available again).

Can't say that I noticed much (if any) difference between the Boge's with 125k on them and the new Bilsteins. Unless you are unhappy with the Boge Reds on your car for some reason, with only 86k on them, they should be good for many more miles. I drive "enthusiastically" and Autocross regularly.

I like the Bilstien and stock spring version, I have it on my 88 and the ride is a bit stiffer BUT at speed this suspension is very planted and controlled,

I think the Boges are too floaty, red or black.

The Konis are good BUT if your using the Boge spring adjuster collar inner threaded rings, They dont lock onto the shock tube so you cant adjust them once they are put together. so you better have the ride height dialed in or you will taking them apart to make adjustements

If the Konis come with their own adjuster collars this will be another story but I dont believe they do. The Bilstiens come with lower perches and adjuster collars

For Stan's problem with the spinning collars on the Koni's on a clinic car, we scuffed the paint and used JBWeld to hold the sleeves to the tube. A very permanent solution. Those shocks came off a few month later, ride was too harsh per the owner.
