New Owner questions
Hi to all. I have been reading the posts for the last couple of weeks and have to say that there is a great amount of information available out here and I am very impressed. I am a new 1988 928 owner and was hoping to get some feedback on a few items.
1. There is a "whistling" noise and tapping sound which seems to eminate from the intake manifold. the noise sounds similar to a tea kettle when it's just staring to boil. Any thoughts? Is this normal? Could the tapping noise be the flappy valve?
2. Is there a recommended location (besides the car jack locations) to put the floor jack to raise the car up? (I don't have ramps - yet).
3. When replacing the stearing rack I haven't seen any talk on replacing the P/S reservoir. should this be figured as a necessary replacement item also?
Thanks to all for your valuable input. I look forward to participation in the rennlist forum.
P.S. Just ordered a RMB from 928 international. Can't wait to put that in.

Hi doug,
The car jack locations are the only place to safely raise the car. no experience with the others other than to say just try to narrow down that sound, don't wear any chains while doing it. From one new owner to another.

1. In regards to that whisteling sound, do you have a steady idle? If it's high or rough, it could be a vacuum leak.
2. There are severall theories on jacking up the beast, I put a 4 foot 2 x 4 under the frame to jack it up and then place the jack under the jack locations in the front. I jack the car in the back under the "cross-beam" and also use the lift points for the jacks.
Cheers,
Sab.

Doug,
In reference to replacing the P/S reservoir, I don't have any personal experience with this but just recently, Greg had mentioned on another thread about steering rack problems, that you should change the reservoir as well because it has a "filter" element in it.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Sharks,

The whistling definitely sounds like a vacuum leak. The tapping you here is inherent to these cars. It is most likely the injectors firing. It could also be noisy valves. Check Greg Nichols site regarding the oil check valve. As far as lifting the car....I use the jack points as well as the front and rear cross members. It helps to utilize a 2x6 to distribute the load.
Good luck on your purchase.....it is a blast!

Doug:
That whistling sound you hear is because your car is SO happy to be with a new owner that will love and cherish it till death do you part.
So you are one of the lucky few that has the LIPTON TEA MAKER OPTION and didn't realize it when purchased.
Seriously, sounds like a large vacuum leak as Brendan stated, but I don't think you can hear a vacuum leak over the engine noise. It's hard to imagine a vacuum leak large enough to "sound similar to a tea kettle when it's just staring to boil" without the car running like hell, but you never know. Never heard of that one before. Keep us posted on what you find wrong.

Doug: You ordered RMB, but don't have owner's manual or shop manuals. Tells me what your priorities are. Just kidding. Welcome. You might want to pick up the owner's manual, lots of info there, like don't use P/S fluid in power steering, but you knew that.

If i find the problem I'll let you know. I am going to remove the Intake manifold in the near future and take a look around. I have other priorities which need attention first.
Steve, thanks for the advice - I would love to buy an extra copy of the Shop Manuals if you have them lying around. It seems that Porsche is not interested in printing them. I have just ordered a CD version though - as an interim measure.

The gaskets between the intake runners and head will make a very loud whistle if they are leaking (don't ask why I know this.) In my case it was #1. Good luck.
