For better or worse the only folks that will have the options data on that car is Porsche, via ordering a COA.

It's a 78 with the lower-power engine which may say it's a US. That engine code should have some punctuation and spaces. Look for a square boss on the top of the engine just to the right-side of the upper hose. (you'll probably be looking to the left)

The VIN confirms it's a '78 as already noted. The VIN is within the range which confirms it's a euro (Start:9288100011 End:9288102646). Engine # ... can you take a photo as I think one number might be wrong and there should be some spaces that are meaningful .. think it might be a 5 speed.
That's all I have.

Tony ... as Errka and Samuel have said, the engine number for a 78 manual has to be M28.01 ... and I would expect to see below that the serial number as a separate line and have seven digits. As that number should start with an 8, I was thinking there might have been a transcription error, and perhaps there were some others added. Only a photo will clear it up. Stand at the front of the car, and look just in front of the water bridge, to the left of the front of the motor ... that's where the number should be with M28.01 top line and then seven digits below with no spaces. If that's where the numbers you quote are, then something funky is going on.
Edit: Just saw the number confirmation in the other thread (928 101 1065RM), and with those spaces and beginning with 928, it sure looks like part or, more likely, a casting number. Further edit ... I think you may be looking at a head casting number, which fits that format.

Thnx Dave. I am looking at pics taken by owner as car is interstate. I feel you are correct that this number is some form of casting number. You are corre t that engine numbers start with an M28. Just thought it may have been different initially with these very first cars just like the VIN #.
Thnx for your help.

Dave, do you know if these cars came with a manual sunroof option as this car has a manual sunroof according to discussion with owner. Never heard of it and am wondering if this may have been an aftermarket addition?? What do you think??

Did you buy it Tony? I was tempted but convinced myself I didn't have room in my life for another project car.. there were a few engine bay bits missing in the photos.

Hey Hilton. No I didn't buy. Spent some time talking to seller. He had bought it to replace the engine with a 4.2L Toyota V8. He has a Soarer and loves the engine in these cars. He says he then realised what he had and decided he would sell and buy a later model (maybe S4). Makes me wonder if he knew something I didn't. He did say if it didn't sell then he would keep. It had a new(ish) leather interior than standard. It was an Australian delivered car. However some previous owner had put in a manual sunroof - pop-up I believe and so the seller commented. Anyway no cigar here and may represented a lot more work although price was reasonable and not much above what the seller paid. Maybe I will contact him to see if still available??

Owner turned down a high bid of $32,500. That would have been $35,750 all in.
