Hi, I have just acquired a 1983 923 . 114.000 mi, kiln red
This car was given to me by a relative who bought it new.
Car seems all original, everything works. however, the timing belt needs to be replaced along with everything that should be done while it is apart .
hoses , fuel lines, intake refresh should also be done. Cars has been keyed both sides and therefore needs a paint job. Interior leather dash needs to be recovered also. I am very capable to do all the work except paint.
I am aware that if I decide to do all this work, the amount of money spent could exceed the value of the car. (what else is new?)
I have been advised by a porsche expert to sell the car and maybe upgrade to a newer 928 or find a good 944. A good 911 is out of my price range. not sure which way to go. any advise from you guys will be appreciated.
thanks

Let me get this straight - You come on here asking if you should save a 928 or get a different one or even (GASP!!!!) a 944*.
No matter what you get it will take work.
Selling the current one "as is" won't get you much money.
If you can do the work, it won't cost all that much**
A full respray will not be cheap. But if you can do most of the work, dismantle, prep, that sort of stuff; then deliver the car to the paint shop with them only having to spray the paint, you can get away spending a lot less.
An 83 isn't going to be worth a whole lot, but only one previous owner, all original, everything working is a bit of a "find."
Personally, I'd keep it and get it sorted out.
And yeah, post some pics.
Notes:
* - Mostly kidding about the 944. I have one, it's a great little car. Different from the 928, but still a lot of fun.
** - For fixing these cars, labor is often the killer. Parts aren't cheap, but if you have the tools and knowledge, a TB/WP & intake refresh plus fuel lines aren't all that bad. And if you don't have the specific know how for these cars, just ask. The info is all here. Lots of folks willing to help out.

Change the fuel lines, change the belt ONLY and drive it for a while....then decide if you really LOVE the car. Then after a few months you can decide what is best for YOU ! It is a 33 year old car another few months matters little. Just resist the urge to try to fix it all, put on new tires and wheels etc. etc. As you point out you can quickly be upside down financially but you may not realize by how much...... Which is why you should be really committed to this car BEFORE you get in so deep that you feel you must "finish" it or keep it forever.
