Default What more should I do when putting the car into storage.

Hi guys!

I'm putting away the 928 for winter in a couple of weeks and am having a major sevice done now, dropped the car off at my mechanic yesterday.

It'll have new oil in the engine, transmission and LSD, new brake fluid, timing belt and spark plugs.

I plan on just giving a full tank of gas and raise the tire pressure to the highest allowed pressure for the tires (to avoid that they go flat when standing still) and connect one of those small solar trickle chargers things to keep the battery happy.

Anything else that you would do except for this? Is it a bad idea to get the car up on stands to get the weight off the wheels, I'm thinking of doing that..

Good Question - I like to hear what everyone offers as well.

I do know that car should be started occasionally and at the same time, cycle the a/c for a few minutes.

Is there any benefit to doing all the fluid changes prior to hibernation as opposed to when it comes out in the spring? I would think spring is better as you're replacing any accumulated condesate.

The reason for doing it now is that I've just bought the car and want to have it in a stat where I know in what shape it is. It was about two years ago most of these things were changed but only 6000 km's.

Where would "accumulated condensate" be hiding? Any other place that the fuel tank, plan on topping it up to avoid this.

Put a fuel stabilizer in the tank with a fresh fill. Disconnect the battery and move to a warm place if car is not stored indoors. Ignore it until spring then charge it. Those are my only definate praperations.

Jacking the car or not is a good question. I've done both on a number of vehicles. I'm reluctant to do it on my 928 due to the front rubber bushings taking a "set." Rears have no issue. I've just put on wheels with tires that are worn out. I would consider jacking the front and then supporting at the ball joint mount. Maybe stick a block of wood in to protect the threads.

Some people will spary oil mist into the cylinders. With an aluminum block this is less valuable.

Some people will run the car periodically. Unless it gets good and hot, that's more harmful than good.

Changing oil in the spring is the right thing to do.

I always disconnect and pull both batteries. I top off my gas tanks and add fuel stabilizer. I plug my air intakes with rags to keep the vermin from nesting on my air filters. I put new oil (dyno) in my engine to remove any acidic build up that accumalates in used oil. I increase my air pressure to help with the tires too, don't have extras yet to do as Glen does. I also crack my windows so that the leather can breathe. And lastly I bag them. Well I bagged one and put on the car cover on the second and then used a large tarp pulled up and over to further hamper the efforts of vermin nesting in my cars. Click on the link in my sig that says Hibernating sHARks. My cars sit like this for seven to eight months every year and I've never had any issues.

While I do not store my 928 for the winter, I do store my MG and I do everything mentioned above: extra air in the tires, new oil, etc. I would make sure that when you put gas stabilizer in the tank you drive several miles to make sure it gets into the injectors since that where the problem will arrise.

Finally as to leaving the car on jack stands vs. extra air, I was advised by my insurance agent that in the event of a fire, you can roll out the cat on wheels, but jack stands don't roll well.

good luck
