Default Repairs COMPLETE ( for now)!

On Dec 6 2015 I brought my newly purchased 1982 928 "project car" to a local Porsche specialist with a budget of $5k for mechanical only repairs. As of today she is finally complete!

I went over budget by about $1.5K which is not bad all things considered.

* New steering Rack
* New Tie Rods
* New Borla Catback Exhaust (sounds amazing)
* New front brakes (pads and rotors)
* New rear brakes (pads and rotors) and rebuilt the original Calipers
* New from Porsche timing belt, water pump, seal, etc.
* New coolant sensor
* Original headlight and taillight control buss
* Tons of re-iwring
* Used tail light housing (2)
* 4 new drive belts (Porsche)
* Numerous new electrical relays

Grand Total = $6,655.19

How does she drive? I have NO IDEA... I had her driven to storage directly from the repair shop.

So what's left to do in Spring?
* AC
* Power Sunroof
* Power Sunroof seal (leaks like a sieve)
* Dash leather repair
* All exterior work (paint, dings, bumps, bruises and slight rust remediation, estimate about $5K.

Oh, and fnally drive her. Since being delivered to my home in late November I have only driven her about 4 miles. From my house to the Porsche shop becuse she was so dangerous and neglected.

Can't wait to drive her!!!!

Dan,

Glad to hear its coming along. Any chance of trying your hands at a little DIY repairs. May help keep the budget under control.

Congrats on a milestone! Now get out and drive

Thanks for the note Guy!

I am comfortable working on my 84 944, but this particular 928 was in such bad condition that I didn't dare touch it. Driving it from my home to the mechanic's place scared the crap out of me. The car started quickly and the tranny was strong but handling was all over the place and no power steering and the engine revved by itself regulalry. Every light on the dash was illuminated. In hind sight I never should have driven her at all given the steering rack and tie rods, but oh well... I got there safely and she is in much better shape now!!

Unfortunately it is winter here in New England so I don't dare take her out with all of the salt and sand on the roads, but trust me she will be driven for quite some time on the first Spring day.

Your sunroof leak issue is probably not the seal. More likely it is the clogged drains in the sunroof assembly. My seal was very sun worn and I replaced it to no avail. Check the forum but all you may need is some weed wacker line to clean out the drains. There are 4 drains located at each corner of the roof.

If your lucky, snaking them clean will do the trick. My two front drains were very clogged and I ended up having to work on the drain points under the front fenders. A PITA especially the LHD passenger side, lots of stuff in the way.

It was a happy day during a torrential storm when I realized the car was dry.

Good luck!

Thumbs up Great Advice!

Thanks so much for the tip. I hadn't considered the drains as the source at all. I will absolutely try this before replacing the seal.

By the way how long are the drains in inches or feet?

Thanks again, great advice!

They would be in feet from the holes on the roof area to the wheel wells. I used weed whacker plastic line and had to also loosen up binding kinks/obstructions at the distal ends.

I think I have read somewhere that you should use the weed whacker plastic line method from the bottom end of the drain hose. This is to avoid inadvertently separating the drain hose from the connection to the sunroof area inside the roof of the car.
Hopefully someone will clarify this.

Yes to this. Would be somewhat problematic to knock the hose of the fitting and getting it back on. Just have to clean off any potential crud that comes out the top.

So where exactly are those drain line exits located underneath?

I have a sunroof leak that I haven't been able to find. Didn't know the drain holes could be the answer.

Default Throttle Sticks and idles high

So I just drove my 928 after 3 months in the shop. The car is 95% better but...

The throttle sticks constantly.

In order to "kick it down" I need to get out of gear (it's a 5 speed manual) and press quickly on the accelerator, then it drops right back down to idle. As soon as I go back into a gear and press the accelerator it happens all over again.

My mechanic had greased the cable hoping that would fix it but it apparently did not.

All tips and tricks would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Yes, thought that he had fixed it. But sadly no. He is a good mechanic but sometimes these old girls are all that cooperative. I purchased a neglected project car and I knew what I was buying. I'm about $7K in on a budget of $5K, but that is to be expected I guess when previous owners defer maintenace due to cost. I don't have buyers remorse thought. The engine is amazing, the new steering rack is tight, new brakes and rebuilt calipers are perfect. It's just this throttle issue at this point. And of course the exterior to bring her back to showroom (that will be a big one)! But all in all I am still the proud owner of this 82 928.

OK by throttle sticks you mean it catches resists movement ? The manual trans cars have no "kick down" so do you mean you floor the gas pedal and nothing much happens ??
