Did someone put this in my filler tube, or is this "leaded only" insert a stock item. I'm spewing gas all over my car, and this appears to be why the gas cap isn't seating properly.

Can;t say for sure, but I know my 77.5 924 had a similar leaded fuel restrictor even though it didn't have a Cat. This was just around the time the US was making the change over to unleaded and I'm assuming Porsche was still going to the parts bin that would be international in flavor.

Well, as Martin Yan would say.
DONE! It wasn't easy. And it wasn't pretty. But there's little doubt it was not supposed to be there. Ah what the hell. Even if it was, I just lightened up the car a bit.

Yeah. It just didn't have that Porsche quality feel to it. That was the tipoff that it wasn't supposed to be there. And that's what I love about these cars, and German quality in general. You can tell right away it it's a stock part by just looking at it. Now just watch someone post that I've ruined a perfectly good gas filler neck. Doh!

I have a few questions:
This thing looks like a restrictor that would only allow the narrower spouts of unleaded gas pumps in - kind of force people not to get leaded gas. If it's a Euro, this could have been installed upon importation.
How many pieces fell into the tank?
How come that your '79 non-S has 4.7 liters of displacement? Last time I looked, all non-S models were 4.5 liters. Has your engine been replaced / upgraded?

The adapter is the type installed by federalizers when a ROW car is imported into the USA. It had to be installed when a cat was installed. This kept you from adding leaded fuel (when it was available) to your cat equipped car. If your 928 isn't a ROW, the tank has probably been replaced from one that was.

Nicole, it was a restrictor. A restrictor of some kind is probably supposed to be there. But not when it restricts the gas cap from closing. But my serial number isn't a Euro. This looks like it was added by an owner. And only a mechanical engineer could make such a mess without dumping pieces into the tank. I carefully got a rag in the spout. It took the better part of an hour to remove the door, and using half a dozen tools, break the thing up without distorting the filler. The metal was like Rockwell C50 or so.
I've got an '83 bottom end. 4.7 liter.

Thanks Sean. I feel better now. So I guess that means we can fill up with diesel if we really want! Hahaha.
Vancouver- I'll bet you've got some great driving up there. I've been looking for a few hundred acres of land up there, for years. I guess real estate is just as hard to find up there as down here.
