Default Double DIN and Ashtray delete.

Greetings list members

I am getting ready for a Double DIN radio install in my 1988 928 S4 with AUX AC and I am looking for some inspiration pics so I can work with the installers on the most optimal design. I have seen some really clean installations here and there but could use a refresher.

Ideally, I would like the double DIN location just under the center vents. The HVAC controls would move down below the double DIN opening, and then the Aux AC controls and clock would move to the ashtray (Ashtray delete).

Has anyone done this?

I promise I will share pics when complete.

Here ya go Michael: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...28-gts-11.html It's a tight fit with a Double Din with CD/DVD because of the depth. Would advise something along these lines:http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500ILX0...3731065&awdv=c T

Yes, I am planning on using the Alpine Apple Car Play model which is shallow depth thanks for the confirmation.

Did you have any trouble moving the HVAC system down?

FYI, your car is fantastic!

I do like that a lot. The one thing I will try and maintain is the recess around the console and the shifter. I see you opted for the flush look. What that by choice or was there some issue that prevented you from using the factory recess?

IIRC it was a fairly easy install that would have been even easier with that shallow mount Alpine Apple Car play. The 3 way Focal separates up front and 10" sub out the back (rear seat delete) with dedicated amps sounded KILLER !! T

My console setup was made by Jerry Feather, his lower insert was designed to be flush to line up with the upper insert to buy enough depth to mount a 6.5" deep CarPC. No reason that the lower insert couldn't be made with a recessed fit, other than doing so myself would be above my skill set.

77Tony - What mods did you have to do to the console trim?

Cord-maybe 1/4" thick, wrapped in thin leather, stiched, and glued down. Note: I did not need to remove the ashtray/12v socket, etc. Little extra bling going on with the raised center armrest below T

See my Flush Center Console Conversion for the Automatic Trans in my avatar. There are two threads about this conversion by me if you do a search. I do mine completely flush because flush is as flush does. I can't quite get my mined around half flush. I am however, redesigning the lower insert so that the shifter boot recess is in one case larger than the one in Rob's and in the other case is a lot more like the original one, but still raised. My conversion is $1000 in basic black for either the auto or manual trans and it is done to your center console with some of the pieces and your double DIN unit shipped to me.

Follow the threads and you might be able to devise something like this for yourself.

I have Al's kit as well and couldnt be happier! The install is a breeze and the low price he charges for it would be hard to beat.
