Default Question for those who have put new foam on their 6" rear speakers

Hello all,

I am in the process of putting new foam on all the speakers in my GT and came across a small issue with the 6" rear speakers. First, the correct size foam is a little difficult to find and second, one of the sources used by folks here say on their website that this speaker cannot be refoamed by DYI'er and must be sent to them at a cost of $35 each to repair/replace the foam. Something about having to cut the speaker cone.....

Here's the link to the Orange County Speaker where it says the speaker cannot be done DYI..... http://www.speakerrepair.com/page/product/OCSRP533.html

On the other hand, here is a thread where it's been done by a DYI'er (I posted in this thread so I may have answered my own question... ) https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-speakers.html

I welcome your thoughts and/or experiences. TIA

I had no problem doing this on my GTS original speakers - IIRC I had to cut the foam to the right diameter with scissors. Very easy to do and many years later still working perfectly.

Thanks Roger. That is what I think I remember too. When I mentioned that to the folks at Orange County Speaker they insisted the cone needed to be cut and it's something a DYI'er cannot do. I'm going to order the closest foam I can to the size I need then cut to fit. Thanks again.

No problem here- you can see my Diet-Coke-induced wobble in trimming these foams for Anderson's '91GT, but they work fine.

Thanks Rob! Might you remember where you got the foam pieces?

I did mine myself and they work perfectly. The dimensions of the originals to match are 146mm ... 135mm ... 118mm ... 110mm ... working from the outside to inside diameters. The dimensions which you need to get as close as you can are the middle two, which are the centre 'ridge', the outer can be trimmed, and the inner can go onto the cone a little more or less.

You should be able to find some matching to close to those figures in the US, but I got mine from here .. http://stores.ebay.com.au/QUEENSLAND-SPEAKER-REPAIRS. I got kit number FS68 (one of their 6" kits), which matches very closely apart from the outside needing a slight trim, as Rob has pictured.

You don't need to take off the dust cover to centre the voice coil with paper spacers, as some repairers suggest, but you can if you want to.

Thanks Dave! Appreciate the info. I've got the speakers all cleaned up and ready to be repaired. Dust caps left in tact.

Thanks Rob! Have the 4" repair kits from these guys in hand. Also ordered a couple 6.5" foams just to see if they'd fit. They don't....
