Vacuum leak would make sense, tgis car has sat quite a bit, got 150 miles in the last three years at the hands of a less than mechanically inclined owner. Ill look into it, thanks brian!

After using a can of carb-cleaner in the engine compartment, spraying every suspect area...it ended up being the large screw on the front of the throttle body, located below the spider plenum. Soaked it down with some penetrating oil, ran it in and out a few times and all was good. Idles prefect now.

Good luck.

Still working on finding that vac leak... Question, my sunroof opens fine but closes very slowly and cant quite make it all the way closed on its own. Should i take the time to clean and grease the tracks or is the sunroof motor just worn out and i should replace?

The tracks and the cables get some attention, clean and lubricate. The motor drives the cables through a little gearbox that has a 30 year old cake of soap where the grease used to be. Remove soap, install grease. Use extreme caution if you decid to adjust the sunroof; many have managed to scratch the top while dinking with adjustments. Know also that the sunroof motor cover is likely a bit fragile at this point in its life, so use delicate fingers and care as you remove and install it.

Edit. I now have guage lights! Pulled apart the switch for the dash lights and im stumped, looks like the switch got corroded and someone jammed a piece of metal in between the two wires that run to it, the wires are hot but no lights still, should i assume at this point that they fried the lights?

Only $6K? After all that sunroof work? That's what's trashing the market -- people selling their cars.

Interior light wiring runs past/through the area where you were working. Most likely the fault is in that area, a wire rubbed through to the body.

Im actually not sure i even want to take the 6k, ill be profiting around 4k but i cant afford an s4 yet and thats the dream car... I may just hang onto it for a bit. I found the problem with the guage lighting bob, the switch is toast. I got it working half the time but the switch is too far gone and i think one of the wires might have a break in it within 6" of the switch, i might cut back a ways and rwplace some wire in addition to the switch

85 gets you into a 32 valve car and a 4 speed auto trans. In budget. I've been looking at it for a bit but not gonna grab this up, so you can have it.

With adding the later brakes, it'll keep up nicely.

Sorry, I mis-read the comment that the gauge lighting was the problem. Can't speed-read through these posts without mizteaks.

Sounds like you and Doc Mirror have similar philosphies. Doc has a knack for finding way-undervalued cars at the low end of the market, adds some work to make them good drivers. Your search for something S4+ in that category may work out given time, as they do pop up once in a while. 5-Speed cars though are snapped up quickly and tend not to go for bottom-of-market prices. Still, a $6-10k initial budget should at least get you in the door on a decent candidate.

Wow that really sucks...sorry to hear that.

If you're still trying to fix the idle I have something to check. I've had several cars before with the "barn door" fuel injection that had one of two things wrong with the cold air bypass valve. First, loose pin connections causing it to not heat up properly; and second, the hard coating on the heating element inside starting to fall apart. I actually had one do that and a piece get caught in the air stream intermittently. I have a spare here I can check to see if it's good if you want for the cost of shipping.

I just drilled the rivets off mine and it looks good inside. Return spring isn't broken. Just a little oily. It'll need some cheap bolts with nylon lock nuts to hold it together. I'll go grab some. If you open it for some reason you have to hold the slide valve open with a punch or something through the air hole before putting it back together so it hooks on the bimetallic spring. Actually, I don't see the green epoxy inside that I remember falling apart. Maybe I'm thinking of the heating element in the warmup regulator of a CIS car. Either way it's yours. P.M. an address and I'll send it out.
