Default window antennas

I was reading in a recent publication's review of the 911's 40 year history, that window-implanted radio antennae were added in 1984 (or 1986, the mag's at home, I'm at work). My question is, why the hell didn't the 928 get one? It was, after all, the "more expensive" Porsche. I mean, my basic four-banger camry has one

I've never found window antennas to be very good. Very bi-directional.

I have to agree. My reception is poor at best. Way down on the list is to add a roof mount from a later model. As it is now, I enjoy the sound of the engine too much to worry about the reception.

If memory serves, bi-directional favors reception from two directions, as opposed to omni-directional, as regular antennas are, have equal reception from all directions.

Thumbs up

My '87 also has the window antenna, and I have no need to put the "fin" on the roof. VERY good reception, even comparing to my other assorted vehicles, Rosy's reception is the BEST!
Maybe those of you who's antennae aren't working, might want to check to see if the antenna amplifier is connected, and working? On my '87, the amplifier is up above the glove box, to the right of the box. Difficult to get to, unless just about ALL of the glove box's parts are out of the way, even then, it's tough.
Maybe having a Blaupunkt still in the car, even though it isn't original, has some effect??? I doubt this......

As Brett says, the most common reason for poor radio performance on later cars may well be a disconnected antenna amp. There should be a fairly small black wire molded onto the main antenna lead. That black wire should be hooked to a 12 vdc supply that is on when the radio is on. There are usually two such connections on newer radios - one marked for the antenna, one for the amp.

It's pretty common to find the antenna amp power wire hooked to ground...

hmm, I found it was in the upgrades for 1986 928 S VIN Range - WP0JB092_GS860001 - 3010

Base MSRP up to: $51,900

Bigger brakes with Brembo four piston calipers and upgraded suspension with VINs higher than 1000

Anti-lock brakes standard

Radio Antenna in windshield

found at http://www.928registry.org/1983-1986...model-info.htm might have been on teh euro models the year before

Aha, here it is... [parahprase] since '85, 911's antenna was in windshield... So they obviously DID put them in 928's in '85 as well. Hmm, I wonder if earlier models could be upgraded...assuming there is a supply of wired-up windows out there. It would have to be an improvement on the flimsy stick-up kind (though honestly I get decent reception with my broken-off power antenna).

I would gamble to say that my antenna amp is not connected. The PO put in a POS aftermarket radio, and I doubt he connected the amp, seeing as how the balance and fader controls are screwed up. Man, another thing to add to my list.......

If you want to "install" the window mount antenna, just get a new windshield for a later model car. They usually go ~$500, installed.

Don't forget the amplifier.
