Default Different 3-speed auto problem: slipping cable? into park?

Hi all-

Searched as best I could and couldn't find this specific problem:

1982 928 ROW non-S auto

Shift lever works fine through all gears but when pushed forward to Park stays in Reverse all the way and has a different feel. While nominally in Park you are still actually in Reverse.

I presume there is a cable that's slipping in a fitting or similar? Where would it be, how do I access it, how do I fix it?

Thanks!

No quick answers? Should I be worrying?

I should add the selector works fine through all the other gears and the car drives fine. Lever just won't carry whatever it's articulating forward into Park.

There will be a cable adjustment bracket (clamping the cable outer) at the lever end under the shifter.
Do the other positions that work have the gear indicator line up ok, or is it a bit off?
I dont recall how the cable attaches at the box, and the WSM doesnt show it that I can find.

PET shows the cable outer having a threaded section that allows for adjustment, right side of box. Ball coupling on shift lever.
Having it still in R when you think its in P could lead to some problems....

WSM, page 37-11, Vol2 Trans. Right side of box. Disconnect ball coupling cable to lever; move selector to N inside car; move lever on box to N (of 1,2,D,N,R,P, front to back); adjust cable so that coupling engages without tension.
