Just in the beginning stages of this same project, plus renewing the air pump system, and installing new cam sprockets, TB, etc. Very encouraging to see someone start and finish this work. Nice job, Mark!

Thanks Mark and others here. I'm in the midst of the same project and this weekend the cam covers come off...hopefully without significant trouble. Mine is 85 5 spd black on black.

Very tricky getting the passenger side cam cover out without damaging the NLA plastic oil separator attached to the underside of the cover. I found I had to disconnect the hard fuel line at the front to push it out of the way, and pull that end of the cover up first. But even doing it that way, you have to do a lot of super careful wiggling and massaging to get it in the right position. Also, you might find the standoffs that the bolts attach to come off instead of the bolts themselves, then you might have to remove the standoffs before the cover will have enough room to come out. Which means working blind with a wrench underneath the cover, and being extremely careful not to drop the standoffs down an oil passage. I'm sure it's all much easier if you remove the engine first, of course.

My Son has kept a running journal of our restoration efforts on the 85 5 spd on another forum. Hope this can help out others in their efforts.

And a video of what she sounds like. Turn up the volume! Just watch the 1st 35 seconds anyway.

Default why you should change pads

Here is the reason you should change those pads before they disintegrate

Yup, three bent valves on Cylinder #4....AND two wreaked cam sprockets.
