Default Stuck drivers side window

I hope someone can help me with this:

Sometimes the drivers side window get stuck, and I have to take off the door panel and loosen the ngine to get it to move. I have changed the motor with winding mechanism to another (used) one, but the problem is still the same.

I have had no problem with the window getting stuck in the lower position, but it seems to wedge itself in the closed or almost close position. When this happens, I can not get it to move unless I remove the door panel and take off the motor. I can see that the motor engages by the drop on the voltmeter.

I belive that the window get stuck in its frame in some way. I have tried different adjustments for the raising "rod" in the door, but the problem alwas scomes back.

I wonder if anyone have experienced something similar?

Ian,

I just did this job on my '90 GT this weekend. In my case, the problem was a dry bearing in the gearbox. If you have the entire window lift unit out, you can remove the motor/gearbox unit, and then remove the motor from the gearbox. Try turning the small gear that drives the window up and down - you should be able to turn it freely with your hand. In my case, I was barely able to turn the gear with a large pair of pliers! The patch that I finally came up with was to use a small, sharp drill bit to drill at an angle, starting at the bottom "V" of the ribs on the gearbox, and intersecting the gearshaft. I drilled until I was certain that I was drilling the shaft - that is, I had fully penetrated the bearing. A few squirts of a good penetrating oil and I could turn the gearshaft freely. I then forced some 15W-50 RedLine synthetic engine oil into the hole, and then whittled a small wooden plug to fit. A plastic, rubber or metal plug would work just as well. Reassembled the window, and it moves faster and more smoothly than I had ever seen it do before.

A "shade-tree" fix - but I didn't want to wait for a replacement. And besides - some of us would rather fix something than replace it...

Wally,

On my 78 the gearbox had a cover with screws holding it on. Did they change on the later models? I was able remove the cover, shake out the dried bits of grease and relube.

Like your attitude Wally!

I have the old style gearbox too, and I have changed the grease in it so it moves freely.

I seems the window gets stuck in some way, usuall at the top, but last time it got stuck 5cm from top. I have tried to use my hands to free it while someone else was pushing the buttons for up and down, but this has never worked.

Oh well, I guess I will have to investigate this more thorough. I am a bit worried about the door frame being bent or something. Maybe the rubber sealing in the frame is damaged?

Thanks guys!
