Marc,
As I see in your avatar pic, you need to expand your brake light illumination. Search, and you'll find threads/pics regarding using Nissan Quest double filament bulb sockets to replace the single filament ones for the running lights. The whole row will then illuminate on braking.

You are on the right track with the TB/WP/belts. There is a long list of other projects that are best done while you are in there. I would also suggest all fuel lines and PS lines (Greg Browns are awesome). There are car-b-que photos here that will make you cry. Make sure you don't have mouse nests aren't in your air intakes and under your intake manifold (found one under my manifold complete with Atlanta peanut shells).

The bulk of your headaches will most likely be electrical due to relays, fuses, grounds and CE panel. Cleaning grounds and fuses (get quality ones through the big supporters not cheap Chinese ones at the local auto parts store-they can fry your CE panel...another story). Clean your grounds and fuses. Dioxit and Stabilant...trust me.

Get your parts from the big supporters on the site, and tell them what you are doing....they know what you will need.

Let's see some photos of your new car!

I feel bad taking picture of her up on the jacks, kind of like taking upskirts or something!

Not sure I'm going to go as far as "barn find" with her condition, but I sure am glad to have her. Vanagons are also known for road-side BBQs, those are new from the tank to the injectors and back. I'll be sure to address the fuel lines asap, will def jumper relay and test for seeps/leaks at first... first round of parts has already run past $2000. Seems like it always comes down to playing the odds with ze german autos

Sweet, thanks for the tip! That was actually unlit, just the flash from the camera reflecting. That will be on my upgrade list once triage and maintenance is done. Big fan of being visible...

Frenzy is at the end of September...great event, great camaraderie, and a large portion of the 928 brain-trust attends every year. You will learn a lot and connect with local human resources - and put faces on the names you will come to know in the forum.

If you are nearby and want to check the box next to crank end play and flex plate, I can help out. I have a dial gauge and have helped a few new owners perform this peace-of-mind task.
I saw the links off of the 928 Forum Sticky. Am intimidated by pulling those exhaust header bolts in order to get at the rear 2 cover bolts. There's little doubt in my mind they've been seizing on there since originally installed.

Thanks for the offer of help and tools, much appreciated!

There are also some plug n' play LEDs that fit right in - save a little alternator output too.

So back to the driveway I go... successfully pulled both TB covers yesterday and got a chance to view the belt. REALLY good thing I practiced a bit of self control and put a hiatus on even starting her. The belt surface is covered with "crackle", I don't see any damage to the belt teeth but the belt looks like it was ready to give it up.

One thing I could use is a line on a wheel. PO must have damaged the 16x8J 7 slot (says ET 52.3 on the inside) and replaced it with a 7. Just for kicks he then put the mismatched 8 on the front. I found a 7" for $106 shipped on ebay but the 8's are more than twice that. Can't imagine paying $225+ for an ugly IMO, dated wheel when the future def holds some more appropriate wheel. Saw some sets on the marketplace but if anyone knows a good source it would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the warm welcomes everyone!

We had a guy show up at a meet in Dallas a few years back with a similar story. Car sitting for years, never had a belt change, no maint history at all.

Took off the belt cover and -- gulp. It was a few teeth attached precariously to a few threads on the belt. The fuel lines crumbled when they were bent a bit. It went home on a flatbed!.

Good find, but we still need pics. don't worry, we've all seen them in various states of undress and/ or decimation.

We're still waiting on pics.

You want help, you have to post pics.

Seriously, lots of people have "Manhole Cover" wheels sitting around. I know Hacker-Schorr has enough in his garage that he's talked about mounting one on the side of his house as a hose reel. The group on here is pretty good about helping out on that sort of thing. I got a set of polished 7" for free (I don't think they were polished to start off with and I had to put in a bunch of work to get them looking nice).

They are actually pretty decent rims. Forged, so they are both light & strong. And the "dated look" helps with theft prevention. Nobody is willing to go to the effort of stealing them.

I just did mine at the recommendation of Captain Slow, and used PB Blaster. It worked like a charm. Although I had air tools handy, hand tools, slow and easy, got the job done, no problem. I left the back two cover bolts out, in a ziplock, and placed in the car w/ a diagram/label as to what they are for.

I really find the color combo interesting. Especially the interior.
Looks like a Loudon County Tax Decal

Good eye, she was a former inhabitant of South Riding.

The Guards Red is really nice (came out an unrepresentative orangey in my dusk pics), the interior color has grown on me, looks more like a deep rich brown in person. PO had a paint job in the early 2000's, was Champagne. Saw some pics of the old color and liked that a lot too, probably would have kept it myself but to each his own.

Paint in the jambs looks well detailed. How it in person?

Did the car stay in Virginia, or go elsewhere?
