Question OK, how reliable are they really? (928s)

Hello all. Just purchased 1987 US 928S4 with approx 37k miles. It's blue with linen interior, completely stock from all I can see.

The car is now getting the timing belt/water pump/tensioner work done,
just because I cannot verify the last replacement date to my satisfaction.

I have been lurking here for a while reading of all the problems with the cars. I have to think there are some good stories out there also.

Maybe I am trying to justify spending $20k on a 16 yr old car, dunno

So tell me, after I am on solid ground to start with, how reliable generally are these cars?

Thanks for the list! Will be subscribing, as I can see I will be spending a lot of time here.

Welcome to the 928 World.

the cars are very reliable aslong as you maintain it properly, If driven well and often and you keep it in tune, not only will you enjoy the car but it will last you for many seasons and should not let you down.

again welcome.

Hello Jay,

welcome to the list.
Properly maintained, the 928 is a tank. I went on a 5K round trip vacation with nothing to report but complete enjoyment. I would not hesitatle to jump in the car and do it again.

there are examples with 200,000 ;300,000 ;400,000 miles on the odometer . You do not do that sitting in the repair shop ! It is a far better car than any other 165 mph , 100 mph in the 1/4 mile $20,000 car .

J -

Stop looking at this great car as a $20k car...it is an $80k Grand Touring machine - the likes of which have yet to be duplicated in the automobile industry.

Like any ULTRA high performance machine - there is a certain amount of maintenance that is required...do this - and you should have NO reliablility problems. That is not to say - it will never break down on you...BUT - even a trusty $20k Toyota Camry is likely to break once in a while! THe difference is in the driving.

ENJOY IT! DRIVE IT! GO do a PCA D.E. and you will never EVER regret your purchase.

Now...one more thing on your "16 year old car"...just how many 16...HECK how many SIX year old cars can turn heads like the shark???

Just a few days ago, I figured up my average maintenance/repair cost per year over the 9 years I've owned my 928 and it came out to just over $1100/year. That includes tires, repairs, oil changes, everything but gas. Granted it had very low miles when I bought it, and it hasn't been a daily driver in about 4 years, but my overall opinion is that they hold up well for their age.

For the drive to Sharkfest, I'm taking no tools that are not built in.

As everyone says, Maintain it. Porsche did a great job in making it easy to work on. Really. I never did a thing myself to my previous 3 sportscars (Triumph Spitfire, Daytona Turbo, Mitsu. Eclipse) but the 928 was easy to tune-up, replace fuel filter and pump, alternatore, belts. (just what you'd expect after 20 yrs...)

This would have cost me 1000's if I couldn't do it. So don't worry, just get your hands dirty when you need to, and you'll love this car even more.

I guess I should say that the worst thing mine has done is have the fuel pump fail after 168K mi. and 21 yrs. Not bad. - Ruf

Having owned both a 928 and a toyota camry (well, Lexus version of) I can say that the 928 is by far more reliable AND the parts are proportionately cheaper. Yes, individual parts are more expensive, but you can see why when you hold them. I figured out how to lie to the Toyota parts desk to get the parts that would work on my lexus so I wouldn't have to deal with the stuck-up ****** at the Lexus one! In comparison to Toyota, BMW parts are dirt cheap...I mean, what the hell!? The Porsche dealership is far kinder to its patrons as well. Sorry, rant over.

lets put it this way, it is THE most reliable car of its age group I would have to say, just do the basic matenance and you should be fine, also know enough mechanics so that if it does do something you can fix it right then and there

Default Thanks folks!

Guess I just needed to hear some warm and fuzzies

After reading so many horror stories, I was beginning to wonder. I did not really research 928s much when this one became available. I had wanted it for a while and the owner finally gave in.

My daily driver is an Acura NSX, and it's most certainly not a car I can even begin to work on myself, so it's nice to hear that won't be the case with the 928!

Thanks again, looking forward to reading and learning from all of you.

Jay,
When you hang around hospitals you begin to think everyone's sick! The Rennlist is, to a great degree, a problem board. People don't often come here without a problem.
There's a DFW 928 owner's board on Yahoo and I and a lot of others would be happy to help you with your car. My email is newfie1@airmail.net Feel free to contact me any time. I'm in Arlington.

I agree.

For the number of miles many of these cars have, they are still superb machines.

Once you get all the "issues" fixed on your car, if you keep up the maintainance, it should run reliably.
Many of us have our cars in the shop so often, or are doing work on them ourselves, because we want assurance of that reliability. I fix the slightest rattle, the first sign of a leak, etc... I often have things being fixed, but it is only because I want the car to be perfect, and run perfect. If I ignored these little things, they would become big things... I prefer to be working on my car, so that when I do take a long trip, I can be assured that some neglected bit of maintainance, is not going to leave me stranded somewhere.

Just got in from driving mine. No shakes, no rattles, no rolls. Mine was built in late 84 and did not even have its timing belt changed until 1998 at 59,000 under PO. (How's that everyone) In the previous 10 years only the water pump and a pod guage failed, the pump because it was not changed with t belt. It so far has been a joy to own. Welcome and what low miles!
