Are there significant improvements from year-to-year in exhaust manifold design?
Hi !
1981 928S Euro 5 Spd LSD KJET/CIS
I wonder if it would be beneficial, from a performance standpoint, to swap out my 1981 [928-111-138-OR] stock euro exhaust manifolds with a later year?
1) Are the significant performance improvements/ differences available year-to-year?
2) Are significant modifications needed to allow interchange and fitting between year-to-year manifolds?
3) Given that the eventual application will be
street only,
cruising,
and even hopefully long-distance journeys
what would you do and why?
(I do love the idea of headers, but I think I'd be leaning toward an updated manifold at this point.)
Again, and as always, a HUGE THANK YOU for your time and advice !!

None are a simple bolt on.....the tubular stainless 85-86 are the closest as they still have the two bolt exhaust port flange BUT Because the ports are centered on the bore rather than offset like the two valve head the three bolt flanges on the other end are too short on one bank and too long on the other....requires you to modify the down tubes/cut weld....

Interesting... thanks James!
And of course, it raises the age-old question, "would you be able to tell the difference in day-to-day driving"?

I have an 84 euro 16 valve with 85/86 downpipes. I use 87 cats. Better flow. Ms ds headers that had been on the car were too loud and impeded access to clutch. Cut weld to match pipes was done on car from beneath for less than 150usd. Remove computers first though.
