'79 928 5 speed:

Is it necessary to pull the motor to change the oil pan gasket?

No, but if there are a bunch of other things that need to be re-sealed it may be better to pull it and take care of it all at once.

Check out the tips on this site for all the info....

Hard to do it in the car and keep it clean, but I have heard it has been done.

Yes you can change the oil pan gasket with the motor in the car.

Something to consider when doing this is to seal the gasket and pan surfaces with Yammabond - many on the email list have reported great results with this product.

Remove the cross brace and attach a piece of steel in it's place. The chain the motor to the temporary cross brace to hold the engine up while you drop the front cross member. This is a good time to check...

Steering rack (and associated hoses)
Motor Mounts
Oil Pickup tube/screen

Be careful when pulling the steering rack down - the low pressure return hose is easily damaged (ask how I might know this!).

Good Luck-

If it's anything like the 944 turbo it will be a pain in the ***. First they had to drop the exhaust, then drop the cross member but not before they held the engine up by using a special brace from above. On the 944 the gasket is made of rubber and is about 1/2 thick. You have to first apply the Yammabond to the oil pan then put on the gasket and after it dries (5 min) you can apply the yammobond to the engine side and install the oil pan and tighten slightly. After 15 min you can torque them to specs. Reno

I have also heard people recommending to install the GTS baffle while you are in there. Its pretty cheap to buy.

I've done mine TWICE with the engine in the car...big PITA but not impossible. I'm alot faster now! Rent an engine lift, undo the motor mounts underneath, raise the engine SLIGHTLY, (so you can get at the bolts under the crossmember) get under there with every possible permutation of 10mm wrenches, and away you go.
Use the Yamabond, (it's why I had to do it twice).
No Big Deal, just make sure you've got plenty of time/beer!!
Good luck.
