The reason I'm suggesting all these things is not as a solution. I'm still trying to understand the EXACT behaviour now. Several thing you said didn't sound reasonable - even with a problem. The more accurately you explain in detail what's happening the better I (and others) can help you.

Something IS weird when there is any interaction between headlights and interior lights... but determining what the cause is takes a very clear picture of the symptoms.

Are you sure all 3 lights at the front do exactly the same thing (roof, left door, right door)?

More experiments. Remove the interior lights delay relay. XXI this model year.

See what the behaviour is. Permanently on mode should still work (without any interactions). Door switched mode should not work at all under any scenario. Behaviour of front interior lights should match the back (when all are in the same switched mode).

Connect pins 31 & 31L in the relay socket (make up a short jumper). In door switched mode the interior lights should be on regardless of the door status (without any interactions*) Behaviour of front interior lights should match the back (when all are in the same switched mode).

* meaning headlights or anything else should have no effect.

so my issue is fixed....

so i was having a heck of a time wrapping my head around the issue, as it seemed it was two unrelated systems influencing each other.

apparently all three of my front interior light fixtures failed at the same time...

I pulled all of the fixtures and had power to all wires.. red and brown and red and brown/white.. but none of the fixtures worked on both positions.

so i just got three volkswagon fixtures recently.i installed male spade connectors and plugged them in and i'll be darned they worked....

so the last issue is what was going on with the dash lights....
after i installed bigAl's double din and hooked up the stereo, and warning/central locking the dash lights worked...

not sure what i actually did but they all work correctly now.

Well done, I wonder when one becomes a fully "seasoned 928 owner".

Steve,
Does activation of your headlights (still) cause anything ?

Glad you fixed it, but I'm pretty sure it was a mis connected interior light all along.

No more issues with the headlights on affecting the lights.

I think that it may have been an unhooked wire for the ashtray light. Grounding .. Maybe.... Haven't figured. That out... But it is not happening any more.

It was definitely not incoreccect hookupmof the old fixtures. I tried the brown and brown\white on both posts....

Car is Christine.... Self fixing...lol
