I went to see the car today - and the info posted here was great - accurate and very helpful - thanks again.
On downshifting it did grind - overcame it once with an attempt to rev match. Overall, I may be leaning away from the car as although it ran straight and true, brakes worked etc, I'm unsure of how much will need to be done. This is what an inspection is for I know. One minor thing - speedo did not work but a very gentle tap to pod got it working - happened about three times on a 15 min drive. That seems relatively minor. Externally it was a good 20 footer; closer, dings cracks and evidence of work (and paint) done were apparent. Looks like front glass was replaced at one point. No paint code decal either.

There was, however, a lot to love - it fired up nicely, drove very well. I admit I loved it. It has a complete tool kit - a mint condition unused pump with the compact deflated spare (if that matters). I'm probably being too cautious; 5 or ten years ago I would have jumped on it. But I have two cars now that I am working on while using them and there could be the wrong kind of fireworks if that number went to three.

I'm going to see if I can talk to the mechanic that worked on the car. I can't buy it without an inspection - that much I know. Even if just to give clear indication of what needs attention now vs in a year...

In lieu of an inspection, attached are a few not very good photos I tried to take under the car. Looks like a sway bar bushing needs replacement... Are these showing any specific evidence of "major" repair needed? Minor repair? Or a solid, but 34 year old underbody?

I see what you mean about slop in the bushings, as for the rear undercarriage, it appears that it has had some attention.
The exhaust looks funny, but you are wise to look and walk away. You know what to look for in what you want.
Don't settle for less.
