'79 automatic Bowden cable issue
Hey to anyone viewing this. Just put the tranny back into my '79 and the Bowden cable is now about 2 inches short of reaching where it needs to clip back on to the ball either up front, or on the tranny itself depending on which I try to hook up first. Moves feely in the metal tube. All we did was pop it off the ball fittings to remove the tranny for repair a couple months ago. Any suggestions??

When you removed it, there is a bracket on upper front of torque converter housing that may have been removed - is it possible that it was not re-attached ? This bracket holds bowden cable.

Hey
The bracket is attached and the cable is mounted back to the torque tube in the same locations (there are marks on the cable housing and torque tube where it was held on by the original gear clamps). Am stymied - I can see having to make a small adjustment in the tension, but there seems to be no adjustment available to make up such a shortage in the length. Not exactly sure how the cable operates mechanically - would the gear selector cable/gear selection interfere with this ( ie: does the tranny need to be in Park or Neutral, etc) or is it all related to the throttle position on the throttle body??

There are 3 possibilities for a 2 inch shortfall (I think).
1 - The transmission/torque tube are 2 inches 'back' - I think unlikely this would be the case if all is bolted up, and you have a good 'bite' on the splines in the locations.
2 - Your attachment point on the cable quad on top of the engine has been changed - I'm familiar with the S4 'quad' set up and not so with a 79 set up, but was any removal of the front attachment points for your cables done too ? Were the other cables removed and re-attached in such a way to cause a movement of the linkage to result in a 2 inch shortfall of the 'ball' of the bowden attachment ?
3 - Lastly, the coursing of the cable from its attachment on top of the engine all the way to the seating into the Right side of the transmission - is it exactly the same ? Is the end of the bowden attached to the lever arm (right angle arm) within the transmission ? If it is not, and just hanging low within the seating hole you could lose the 2 inches there.
I think (1) is theoretically possible, but unlikely. Possibility (2) exists, and is more likely than (1). (3) I think is the most probable. Go under and track its course from end to end.

And, control pressure control cable (bowden cable) is not related to the gear shift cable going to the range selector linkage on the transmission. The bowden tension/movement is primarily related to the the throttle cable, and all things at the linkage on top the engine. Being in Park/Neutral is no matter.
