Default Clutch Rattle

Re: 1985 928 S - 5 speed

I have a clutch problem. There is a rattling noise when the clutch if fully depressed to the floor. I thought it was the release bearing, so I had my mechanic install a new one. No luck. The noise is still there.

I also replaced the plastic bushing at the end of the throw out fork. The bearing at the back of the engine seemed fine, and when I inspected the pressure plate and discs I didn’t see any problems. I’m at a loss. The clutch works fine other than the rattling noise.

Any thoughts?

Sam

Is that the bearing in the back of the engine? My mechanic said he lubed it, spun it and thought it was all right. Maybe he was wrong.

its a sealed bearing at the end of the crank.... so I'm not sure how he lubed it....

I called my mechanic and he said he carefully checked the pilot bearing and it is all right.

Could it be the discs or pressure plate?

^^^ Yes it could be. Have the condition of those been checked?

Wear of the splines on the driven plates and the stub shaft could also cause rattling .. were they checked? If so and they were OK, were the splines and other components lubricated with the specified extreme pressure/high temp grease?

I checked the discs on the spline, but I had no frame of reference. They seemed all right, but they might have been looser than spec. I wasn't in the shop during the re-assembly. I'll have to ask my mechanic about the grease.

Thanks for the tip.
