Hello, I've been a Porsche enthusiast/owner since 1983. I've owned or own a 914, 911, and 944 turbo. I'm starting to look at 928s. I prefer a later model with the updated gauges but would consider a mid 80s model. The GTS or even GT models are above my budget. Would like to stay around $20K give or take a few grand. How do the 85-86 "S" models compare to the later S4? Are the S4s significantly more refined? Is the slight power difference very noticeable? Do the bigger S4 brakes give a noticeable improvement in braking? Thanks

'85/'86 can be porken'd and get near the s4 numbers. The s3 ('86.5, vin above 1000) has the s4 brakes as well as suspension and antilock. For the money your talking you should be able to get a 928 that is very very nice (and maintained well)

Welcome to the 'tank' and good luck with the search.

Yes, you've come to the right place. Sounds like you'd like an '89 - '91 S4 with the digital dash ('90 + added airbags). Plenty of good ones are available for $20K or less ...
