After doing a lot of searches, I ran across a nice set of used 3-point retractable belts from a late model 928.
This is from the Parts Catalog.
And this from one of the old threads on the subject.
Two Questions:
1. From the photo above it APPEARS that the spacer (Item #4 in the PET diagram) mounts between the C-pillar cover and the mounting hole in the C-pillar. In other words, this spacer is not visible once installed, correct?
2. Also, are the caps (Item 5 in PET) color matched to the interior or are they all black?
Yes, and I think so - no colour is mentioned as an option there. I am not sure there isnt an issue fitting the later rear retract units into the early model cavity - something in the back of my mind says its seen mention of such an issue. I have non-retracting 3 points in the rear, and its not worth fiddling with the rear quarter panels again to change them.
JP. Thanks for the input. You are correct re: the fitment issue. BUT from what I've read, supposedly 84 and later can accept the late style retractable receiver.
PET catalog for the 83-86 shows the retractable lap belt part numbers (US market) but also shows pictures for the static and retractable 3-point belts for ROW cars. Unfortunately, since my PDF of the PET catalog is just for the US market, it does not show the part numbers for either of the 3-point belts or the transition year.
In my version of the PET catalogs the part numbers only start to show up in the 87-91 US PET catalog when they became available in the US. So I can't see which year transitioned from static to retractable; only that it occurred sometime in the 83-86 run. From what I've read, it seems that '84 will accept the retractable 3-point belt. But there will be only one way to tell for sure.
I found a pretty good deal on this set. if they don't fit I'll pick up a set of static belts and resell these. Thanks again.
Don't know about later models, but my '80 has lap seat belts, & got a hold of a set of '85 3 point seat belts as I'm swapping out the old interior for a nice leather one. The original rear belt is quite small, like you have in that diagram, and while the 85 ones will fit width & height into the gap, the gap is not deep enough. It's got a metal backing so it's either the wheel well or behind the fuel pump in the wheel well probably.
Yes, that's consistent with the write-ups I've found on Rennlist. If you search under 3-point rear seat belts, one OB owner discovered you could not it the retractable rear belts into the early car. It has been posted that 84 is the crossover year that lets you fit them - but I have not been able to confirm this as of yet. I will post an update on this thread when I get around to attempting to install them to confirm.
